Eila, Apple has just announced the biggest revenue quarter of any US company, EVER They had a record 74.6 billion dollars in revenue and a record, 18 BILLION in net profit. Those numbers FAR surpassed ANY analysts expectations. So what led to the surge? iPhone sales of course. The company_s new larger-screen 6 and 6 Plus models were flying off the shelves. Apple sold more than 74 million of them worldwide in the quarter. And the momentum should keep going for a while because their highly anticipated iWatch is set for release this April.The forecast isn_t quite as sunny on the US economic front. Business investment spending has dropped for a fourth consecutive month. Economists say it could be a sign that slowing worldwide growth might finally be having an impact stateside. A strengthening American dollar has also made US exports more expensive. However it isn_t ALL bad news. Consumer attitudes remain upbeat, and December saw home sale hit their highest levels since June 2008.And in Russia, things are going from bad to worse. Rating agency, Standard and Poor_s, has just downgraded the country_s credit rating to junk status Half of Russia_s government earnings come from oil and gas exports. And with oil prices falling at staggering rates, the nation has been pushed to the brink of recession. The S&P rating cut will make it much harder and pricier for Moscow to borrow money. Meanwhile the Russian ruble has hit all-time lows, losing more than forty percent of its value against the US dollar. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been leading the charge for peace talks, and officials from the four nations held a telephone conference on Sunday. Western powers accuse Russia of arming rebel forces and sending troops to the region - charges Moscow has repeatedly denied. It was a dramatic day in Australia as Prime Minister Tony Abbott survived a surprising vote aimed at booting him from office His ruling Liberal Party has been plagued by infighting in recent weeks. On Monday a secret party room ballot was launched calling for his dismissal. Abbott managed to win the vote by a 61 to 39 margin, but pundits say his grip on power has taken a significant blow. And British bank HSBC is under a fresh round of scrutiny for helping thousands of wealthy clients evade tax payments and hide millions in assets. New documents provided by a former HSBC employee show the bank helped shelter dictators, arm dealers, and various other criminals. The bank says its Swiss branch - which was acquired in 1999 - was not fully integrated into HSBC and had significantly lower standards of due diligence. HSBC now faces criminal investigations in four countries: the US, Belgium, France, and Argentina. We_ll be right back. FX drama Justified is leading the way at this year_s Critics Choice Awards The show, starring Timothy Olyphant as US Marshal Raylan Givens, finished its sixth and FINAL season a few weeks ago. Justified and HBO mini-series Olive Kitteridge both landed five nominations apiece. It_s been a great year for HBO, which garnered a network leading 27 nominations thanks to hit shows like Girls, Veep, and Silicon Valley. The big show will air on A&E at 8pm eastern time May 31stConan O_Brien_s late night show is heading to San Diego to film from Comic Con. The show will even adjust its broadcast schedule to air on the Saturday. Not everyone is on board with the schedule change, though. You can catch Conan bring both worlds together at Comic-Con this July.Watch out Kim, Kanye may be getting his own TV show. The CEO of Vice announced this week that the media company is in talks with the rapper to host his own series on their upcoming cable channel. Somehow the show didn_t get picked up.Steven Spielberg_s Amblin TV will produce a show for the Syfy channel based on the classic futuristic novel Brave New World. Set in the year 2540, the outwardly perfect existence of society is offset by a rebellion from an outsider. Spielberg_s Amblin TV previously paired with Syfy on the Emmy-award winning alien miniseries Taken.And the longest running series in television history is about to get a little longer. The Simpsons has been renewed for two more years, bringing the total episode count to a whopping 625. The show still averages 6.2 million viewers an episode but I doubt that there_s anyone out there who hasn_t seen one.
