Welcome to the newsroom everyoneVS) As you might expect Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich clashed once again at the latest Republican debate in Tampa Florida. After suffering a setback in the polls in South Carolina Romney changed tactics and took to attacking the surging Gingrich. Romney accused him of being an influence peddler with a spotty track record in Washington. SOUNDBITE- For his part Gingrich angrily denied the accusations. He refused to get personal and decided instead to take the high road. SOUNDBITE-Despite having a target on his back all night Gingrich has made strong gains in the polls and early numbers Monday gave him a nine percent lead amongst Florida voters. VS) Political insiders say that a big reason for Romney_s slide in the polls was due to his reluctance to release his 2010 income tax statement. Well that all changed Tuesday morning. Amidst immense public pressure Romney released the tax documents which show that he paid about 3 million dollars in federal taxes last year. He earned SEVEN times that on his investments alone Romney says the modest 14 percent tax rate he paid in 2010 will rise slightly on his 2011 statement. The rate pales in comparison to that of Newt Gingrich who paid 31 percent last year.And it may sound like the beginning of a sci-fi movie but we can assure you this is real. The Earth has been hit with the strongest radiation storm in several years. That_s according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency which says a massive solar eruption on Sunday night is the culprit. Although the storm poses no health risks it does have the potential to wreck REEK havoc on electronic equipment including communications satellites navigation equipment and even rocket launches. VS) Mitt Romney lost by double digits in Saturday_s South Carolina primary and the future_s not looking any brighter for him. Newt Gingrich_s last minute surge in the polls paid off and now it looks like that surge has followed him to Florida. An Insider Advantage poll says Gingrich has taken the lead by a full 8 points. Worse still for Romney the same poll says these numbers are part of a larger trend suggesting Republicans are moving toward Gingrich on a national level. Over to the Middle East now where Syria has refused demands from the Arab League for President Bashar al-Assad ba-SHAR al-ah-SAD to relinquish power to his deputy. Meeting in Cairo the League also called for Syrian officials to form a coalition government with the country_s opposition. UN figures say over 5000 people have died in the past 10 months due to crackdowns on protesters. Nonetheless the government in Damascus da-MASS-kus maintains these casualties represent nothing more than terrorists and armed gangs.With divers having uncovered yet another body the death toll for the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster now stands at 13. Meanwhile disgraced captain Francesco Schettino ska-TEE-no has stated on record that _sail-by salutes_ like the one that brought down his ship are regularly requested by management. He also claims this practice is particularly encouraged during local holidays as a way to bolster publicity for the cruise line. Schettino_s comments directly contradict the recent Costa press conference that stated only one _sail by_ has ever been authorized. And that_s your first look at the news we_ll be right back.

The ship ran aground during what was supposed to be a friendly salute to the people on the tiny island of Giglio (ZHEE-lee-oh). The 615 million dollar vessel should have been 4 miles out to sea but was instead just 300 yards from land when it crashed. Seven people have been found dead and twenty-nine others remain missing. 2. VS) According to doctors in Venezuela president Hugo Chavez (OO-go CHAH-vehs) probably wonit live to see 2013 due to his fight with cancer. In fact the polarizing leader may not even make it to his countryis presidential election this fall The claims contradict word from Chavez himself that heis completely cancer-free since undergoing surgery in Cuba.Side CloseKC) Medical sources close to Chavez say that his prognosis is as bad as it could possibly be. Chavez himself acknowledged on his TV and radio broadcast that he was still undergoing chemotherapy. Sources have apparently said that the Cuban surgery was botched and that the cancer has spread from his colon and prostate to his bones.3. VS) Elsewhere on the international scene a part of NATOis controversial missile defense system has gone live An early-warning radar station in Turkey is now operational. The station is being manned by both Turkish and US staff. Turkey is one of five countries who have agreed to participate along with Spain Poland Portugal and Romania.KC) Meanwhile Iran n which shares a border with Turkey n is objecting to the system. Another country voicing objections is Russia. They say they want a legally binding treaty that says NATOis system wouldnit be used as a deterrent against Russia.
