Cassiodorus and his assistant Sulpicinus of Velletri take advantage of the situation to rig the games, arrange bets, and prostitute the Vestals. Discovered, the two friends are sent back north where they make the acquaintance of Lugunga, Vindice's daughter, and clash with Zundice, the current leader of the Lycians, who is determined to avenge his brother's death. Cassiodorus finds himself forced to fight the new leader of the barbarians, whom he kills by accident. Back in Rome, he is appointed consul but cannot take advantage of his new position since Nero has burned Rome. Cassiodorus and Sulpicus move to the Sahara but, while they are deceiving the Bedouins, they realize that even in the desert their lives will not be so peaceful
