Summer is officially here. Piper Candless and I took a short break from the Palm Springs heat and enjoyed the cool refrigerated air in her posh hacienda. Now, refrigerated air is supposed to be better, more efficient technology than _swamp_ cooling. However, there is something utterly therpgutic about a swamp cooler. Most of you will probably have no idea what I am talking about unless you have spent time in a desert climate like my childhood hometown of El Paso, Texas. The smell, sound, and feeling of moistened cool air being pumped through the vents brings me an odd sense of comfort. It_s also the perfect sedative for a siesta in the midst of a hot day. I checked the temperature in El Paso and it was just under 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius) today. But global warming is still a myth, right? Right? Tomorrow we will enjoy a dip in the backyard pool.

Its always a pleasure to be around people who are enjoying themselves. This is probably why I love photographing Aysha Thoen so much. Aysha has overcome plenty of adversity in her life and still keeps on smiling. While photographing all these beautiful women, I have encountered many interesting and sometimes tragic backstories. One girl (not Aysha) witnessed her father beaten to death in front of her own eyes as a child. She became a stripper, a drug addict, and had a tendency to attach herself to abusive males. Nonetheless, her smile continues to beam bright and she has made strides to a better future for herself and the children she hopes to raise. Not sure where I am going with this. Perhaps I just want to point out that plenty of these girls inspire yours truly. Sometimes their appearance may seem vulnerable, but that seldom matches their character.
