I_m Victoria Sinclair welcome. American authorities are one step closer to capturing those responsible for the US consulate attack in Benghazi. Libyan officials have singled out one man believed to be the leader of the group behind the assault. Eila Adams has more on this story and joins us now with the latest. Vic according to Libyan authorities witnesses at the scene say that Ahmed Abu Khattala was the man leading the charge. Khattala is a prominent figure of a militant group based out of Benghazi called Ansar al-Shariah. The group has many of the same puritanical and anti-western views as Al Qaeda. Libyan police have yet to bring Khattala in for questioning however. Vic US officials acknowledge that they_ve got their eye on Khattala but still aren_t convinced that the attack was orchestrated by just one man.So if the Libyans are so confident of his involvement why haven_t they brought him into custody yet?For one thing the newly elected government there is still pretty shaky. Plus the military and police force aren_t exactly organized which makes it tough to coordinate operations. Well I_m sure if the Americans decide he_s their man they_ll take care of things themselves much appreciated Eila.The Libyan attack is unfortunately not the only terrorist activity on our radar today. A shocking story has emerged from New York City where a suspected terrorist attempted to detonate a thousand-pound bomb in front of the Federal Reserve building in Manhattan. Luckily the FBI was able to thwart the plot. Katherine Curtis has been following this developing story. What_s the latest KatVic a 21-year old Bangladeshi man has been arrested after attempting to blow up the building during morning rush hour. came to the US in January on a student visa. After arriving in New York City he allegedly tried to reach out to members of Al-Qaeda but instead contacted an undercover FBI agent. The feds tracked Nafis for months eventually supplying him with faulty explosives loaded into a cargo van. Authorities nabbed him right after he tried to detonate the bomb. They say there was never any risk to the public Vic.It_s quite the story Katherine. Do we know What kind of charges he_s looking at?Attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to Al-Qaeda. About as serious as it gets.Some amazing work by the authorities here. One can only imagine the devastation had he been successful. Thanks for the update Kat.We_ll wrap up this first look at today_s Naked News in a Manhattan courtroom where an Iranian man has pled guilty to plotting the assassination of a Saudi Arabian ambassador on US soil. 58-year old Manssor Arbabsiar a used car salesman living in Texas tried to hire an undercover DEA agent posing as a Mexican drug cartel member to carry out the attack.According to prosecutors Arbabsiar was working under orders from the Iranian military. He offered the undercover agent one-and-a-half million dollars to carry out the hit. The plot involved bombing a Washington area restaurant as well as the embassies of Israel and Saudi Arabia. Arbabsiar_s sentencing will take place on January 23rd. His charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years behind bars. We_ll be right back.

Welcome to Naked News I_m Rachelle Wilde. The US military has sent troops to Jordan to keep an eye on Syria and it_s massive stockpile of chemical weapons. US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta made the announcement following a NATO meeting in Belgium. Panetta says about 150 special ops soldiers are working alongside Jordanian forces. Their goal is to watch the movement of chemical weapons in Syria and to help determine how to respond in the event violence spills into Jordan or any other neighboring countries. American President Barack Obama has warned Syria that any attempts to ship the weapons will prompt an immediate US response. Elsewhere in the region tensions between Turkey and Syria seem to be escalating. On Wednesday the Turkish air force intercepted a Syrian passenger jet flying over Turkish airspace. Officials suspect the Syrian aircraft was being used to smuggle military equipment over from Russia. Eila Adams joins us now with more on this story. Rachelle twenty-five people were aboard the Damascus-bound Airbus A-3-20 when it was intercepted and led back to the Turkish capital of Ankara. This came after Turkey received intel of a possible weapons transfer aboard the aircraft. The country_s foreign minister would not give any specifics as to the type of illicit cargo. He said it is unacceptable that these types of transfers are being made over its airspace. Turkey has upped the rhetoric Rachelle by threatening a violent response should shelling continue near its shared border with Syria. Back to you. Thanks for the story Eila. On the technology front the makers of one of the world_s most popular web browsers have egg on their face after a MASSIVE security flaw was discovered in their latest update. Our resident tech-spert Katherine Curtis has been following the developments. What_s the latest Kat? If you use Mozilla Firefox to watch the program you_ll want to hear this. A huge security hole has been discovered in the latest update. Mozilla released a statement saying that the vulnerability could allow a malicious site to access a user_s entire search history. This affects the latest update - Firefox 16 which has since been taken offline. Mozilla says if you haven_t upgraded yet you should be fine. If you HAVE or if it was automatically updated they advise that you downgrade to the previous version.You can do so by going to the link on your screen right now. The non-profit company says that only a small number of their 450-million users have been affected so far. Back to you Rachelle.Thanks for that Kat. I_m Victoria Sinclair and you_re inside the naked newsroom. Hurricane Sandy is now a category 2 storm with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour. Jamaica felt it_s wrath on Wednesday and now it_s CUBA_S turn with the US in its sights for Friday. Kat Curtis has the story.Vic according to the National Hurricane Center Hurricane Sandy will drop upwards of 11 inches of rain on the eastern parts of Cuba. Thousands of people have been moved to storm safe havens away from areas that are expected to flood. Many hotels have set up generators for power in the case of emergency. Heavy rains are also expected in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Sandy has already claimed the life of one man in Jamaica and two others in the Caribbean. Vic?Now I know there_s been some concern about this storm for Florida residents Kat. Should people there be worried?Well at this point it looks like Sandy will weaken as the storm passes over Cuba. Experts have issued a tropical storm watch which means strong winds and heavy rains. But it_s doubtful Sandy will have the same impact we_ve seen over these last couple of days. Good to know. Shifting gears now I know you_ve also been following the sentencing hearing of the man infamously known as the Millennium bomber. Has the judge reached a decision yet?He has Vic. Algerian Ahmed Ressam will now serve 37 years behind bars for plotting to bomb Los Angeles International Airport on December 31st 1999. Ressam was nabbed at the US-Canada border near Seattle in December _99 and later convicted of conspiracy to commit a terrorist act and smuggling explosives. Ressam became a key informant on the inner workings of Al-Qaeda leading the feds to 100 other suspected terrorists. But in 2003 he stopped cooperating with authorities. He was originally sentenced to 22 years in prison but in 2010 prosecutors started pushing for a longer term. Back to you.The longer he_s behind bars the better much appreciated Kat. Over to the Middle East now where the United States and Israel are spending three weeks holding their largest-ever joint military exercises. Approximately 35 hundred American soldiers have been brought in to the region where they_ll work with Israeli troops on strategies designed to better protect the Jewish state. In a news conference outside of Tel Aviv Senior Air Force General Craig Franklin stressed the importance of the initiative saying the U.S. is 100 percent committed to the security of Israel. According to officials the plan was being referred to by the alleged terrorists as a follow-up to 9-11. Katherine Curtis has been following this developing story and joins us now with the latest. What_s going on Kat?Vic the suspects were apparently calling it 9-11 TWO and it was supposedly set to occur on the 7th anniversary of al Qaeda_s last attack inside Jordan. Officials say that 11 suspects were taking part all Jordanian citizens who were moving in and out of Syria. Jordan_s intelligence suggests that targets included the US Embassy shopping centers and other areas populated by foreign nationals. They suggest that the shopping center attacks were designed to attract attention away from other more prominent target buildings. Vic the group reportedly planned on using a variety of weapons including car bombs and submachine guns. Kat has it been confirmed that these would-be attackers are part of al-Qaeda?Too soon to say right now Vic. Intelligence officials aren_t technically labeling them as al-Qaeda. However they DO say the suspects are quote associated with the ideology of al Qaeda.A very carefully worded statement. Thanks Kat. I trust you_ll keep us up to speed on any developments there.Elsewhere in the Middle East thousands of mourners gathered in Beirut (bay-ROOT) to pay their respects to slain intelligence official Wassam al-Hassan. He was responsible for uncovering an alleged Syrian bomb conspiracy 2 months ago. It_s believed that he was the primary target in a car bombing that killed him and 7 others and injured scores more. Lebanese politicians are accusing the brutal Syrian leadership of being behind the assassination. The opposition party is also calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati who has ties to Syrian allies. Reports have surfaced suggesting that the US could be setting up one-on-one talks with Iran over their nuclear program. However the White House is strenuously denying these rumors. Natasha Olenski joins us now with the latest. What are you hearing Nat? It depends on who you believe Vic. The New York Times is reporting that Washington has approached Iran about having bi-lateral talks regarding their nuclear ambitions. The report quotes anonymous officials as saying that Iran was receptive to the idea but only after America_s presidential election in November. However American officials say that_s not the case. The White House says that they would be more than happy to meet but that nothing was on the table as of yet. The US and many other countries contend that Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons - charges that Tehran has repeatedly denied back to you Vic.Thanks very much Nat. Believe it or not thereis finally some promising news out of Greece. Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras says the latest round of bailout money and austerity measures will likely help the economy turn the corner by next year. Stournaras also claims Greeceis chances of leaving the European Union are now very small.And Google has expanded its global map coverage to an unlikely place: North Korea. Users can now find public landmarks as well as the infamous prison labour camps. Most of the data comes from Google_s Map Maker software which allows people to add to detail maps based on satellite images.

KC) Vic the violence was a response to an Egyptian court_s sentencing of 22 people to death for their involvement in a fatal 2012 soccer riot. Unfortunately President Morsi_s decision to call the state of emergency has exacerbated the situation leading to further angry demonstrations. The emergency measures are specific to the cities of Port Said Suez and Ismalia. However violence has spread nationwide including severe clashes between protesters and police in downtown Cairo.Although the court_s decision over the soccer riots is a new development the underlying issue has remained the same for months. KC) Vic activists believe Morsi is curbing personal freedoms to push through his Islamic agenda.VS) With the state of emergency only deepening the conflict what_s next for the president?KC) That_s the million dollar question. On Monday Morsi agreed to discuss the crisis even calling for a national dialogue with several of his opponents. But it_s too early to tell if anything productive will come from that.VS) Very volatile situation to say the least - thanks for the update Kat. Now with more of today_s news here_s Eila Adams.EA) Vic 3 people have been arrested in connection to that devastating nightclub fire in Brazil. The death toll stands at 230 people in the university city of Santa Maria. Although an investigation is still ongoing it appears a bandis pyrotechnics display is at least partly responsible for the deadly blaze.Israeli officials say theyid consider launching a pre-emptive military strike to prevent Syriais chemical weapons from falling into the wrong hands. With concerns over Syrian President Bashar al Assad losing control over the country Israel says it must ensure groups like Al Qaeda and Hezbolla are unable to benefit from the political instability. Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger warns that there could be a nuclear crisis in Iran in the ìforeseeable futurei. Libyan officials have singled out one man believed to be the leader of the group behind the assault. Eila Adams has more on this story and joins us now with the latest. Vic according to Libyan authorities witnesses at the scene say that Ahmed Abu Khattala was the man leading the charge. Khattala is a prominent figure of a militant group based out of Benghazi called Ansar al-Shariah. The group has many of the same puritanical and anti-western views as Al Qaeda. Libyan police have yet to bring Khattala in for questioning however. Vic US officials acknowledge that they_ve got their eye on Khattala but still aren_t convinced that the attack was orchestrated by just one man.So if the Libyans are so confident of his involvement why haven_t they brought him into custody yet?For one thing the newly elected government there is still pretty shaky. Plus the military and police force aren_t exactly organized which makes it tough to coordinate operations. Well I_m sure if the Americans decide he_s their man they_ll take care of things themselves much appreciated Eila.The Libyan attack is unfortunately not the only terrorist activity on our radar today. A shocking story has emerged from New York City where a suspected terrorist attempted to detonate a thousand-pound bomb in front of the Federal Reserve building in Manhattan. Luckily the FBI was able to thwart the plot. Katherine Curtis has been following this developing story. What_s the latest KatVic a 21-year old Bangladeshi man has been arrested after attempting to blow up the building during morning rush hour. came to the US in January on a student visa. After arriving in New York City he allegedly tried to reach out to members of Al-Qaeda but instead contacted an undercover FBI agent. The feds tracked Nafis for months eventually supplying him with faulty explosives loaded into a cargo van. Authorities nabbed him right after he tried to detonate the bomb. They say there was never any risk to the public Vic.It_s quite the story Katherine. Do we know What kind of charges he_s looking at?Attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to Al-Qaeda. Thanks for the update Kat.We_ll wrap up this first look at today_s Naked News in a Manhattan courtroom where an Iranian man has pled guilty to plotting the assassination of a Saudi Arabian ambassador on US soil. 58-year old Manssor Arbabsiar a used car salesman living in Texas tried to hire an undercover DEA agent posing as a Mexican drug cartel member to carry out the attack.According to prosecutors Arbabsiar was working under orders from the Iranian military. He offered the undercover agent one-and-a-half million dollars to carry out the hit. The plot involved bombing a Washington area restaurant as well as the embassies of Israel and Saudi Arabia. Arbabsiar_s sentencing will take place on January 23rd. His charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years behind bars. We_ll be right back. The US military has sent troops to Jordan to keep an eye on Syria and it_s massive stockpile of chemical weapons. US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta made the announcement following a NATO meeting in Belgium. Panetta says about 150 special ops soldiers are working alongside Jordanian forces. Their goal is to watch the movement of chemical weapons in Syria and to help determine how to respond in the event violence spills into Jordan or any other neighboring countries. American President Barack Obama has warned Syria that any attempts to ship the weapons will prompt an immediate US response. Elsewhere in the region tensions between Turkey and Syria seem to be escalating. On Wednesday the Turkish air force intercepted a Syrian passenger jet flying over Turkish airspace. Officials suspect the Syrian aircraft was being used to smuggle military equipment over from Russia. Eila Adams joins us now with more on this story. Rachelle twenty-five people were aboard the Damascus-bound Airbus A-3-20 when it was intercepted and led back to the Turkish capital of Ankara. This came after Turkey received intel of a possible weapons transfer aboard the aircraft. The country_s foreign minister would not give any specifics as to the type of illicit cargo. He said it is unacceptable that these types of transfers are being made over its airspace. Turkey has upped the rhetoric Rachelle by threatening a violent response should shelling continue near its shared border with Syria. Back to you. Thanks for the story Eila. On the technology front the makers of one of the world_s most popular web browsers have egg on their face after a MASSIVE security flaw was discovered in their latest update. Our resident tech-spert Katherine Curtis has been following the developments. What_s the latest Kat? If you use Mozilla Firefox to watch the program you_ll want to hear this. A huge security hole has been discovered in the latest update. Mozilla released a statement saying that the vulnerability could allow a malicious site to access a user_s entire search history. This affects the latest update - Firefox 16 which has since been taken offline. Mozilla says if you haven_t upgraded yet you should be fine. If you HAVE or if it was automatically updated they advise that you downgrade to the previous version.You can do so by going to the link on your screen right now. Kat Curtis has the story.Vic according to the National Hurricane Center Hurricane Sandy will drop upwards of 11 inches of rain on the eastern parts of Cuba. Thousands of people have been moved to storm safe havens away from areas that are expected to flood. Many hotels have set up generators for power in the case of emergency. Heavy rains are also expected in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Sandy has already claimed the life of one man in Jamaica and two others in the Caribbean. Vic?Now I know there_s been some concern about this storm for Florida residents Kat. Should people there be worried?Well at this point it looks like Sandy will weaken as the storm passes over Cuba. Experts have issued a tropical storm watch which means strong winds and heavy rains. But it_s doubtful Sandy will have the same impact we_ve seen over these last couple of days. Good to know. Shifting gears now I know you_ve also been following the sentencing hearing of the man infamously known as the Millennium bomber. Has the judge reached a decision yet?He has Vic. Algerian Ahmed Ressam will now serve 37 years behind bars for plotting to bomb Los Angeles International Airport on December 31st 1999. Ressam was nabbed at the US-Canada border near Seattle in December _99 and later convicted of conspiracy to commit a terrorist act and smuggling explosives. Ressam became a key informant on the inner workings of Al-Qaeda leading the feds to 100 other suspected terrorists. But in 2003 he stopped cooperating with authorities. He was originally sentenced to 22 years in prison but in 2010 prosecutors started pushing for a longer term. Back to you.The longer he_s behind bars the better much appreciated Kat. Over to the Middle East now where the United States and Israel are spending three weeks holding their largest-ever joint military exercises. Approximately 35 hundred American soldiers have been brought in to the region where they_ll work with Israeli troops on strategies designed to better protect the Jewish state. In a news conference outside of Tel Aviv Senior Air Force General Craig Franklin stressed the importance of the initiative saying the U.S. is 100 percent committed to the security of Israel. Lebanese politicians are accusing the brutal Syrian leadership of being behind the assassination. The opposition party is also calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati who has ties to Syrian allies. Reports have surfaced suggesting that the US could be setting up one-on-one talks with Iran over their nuclear program. However the White House is strenuously denying these rumors. The New York Times is reporting that Washington has approached Iran about having bi-lateral talks regarding their nuclear ambitions.
