We_re starting off with an alleged billion dollar fraud scheme in New York City Prosecutors are calling it one of the largest and most brazen investment frauds ever Eila Adams joins us now with the story. Carli federal prosecutors have arrested top executives from New York-based hedge fund Platinum Partners for running a scheme that swindled investors out of nearly one billion dollars Company founder Mark Nordlicht and six others have been charged with various crimes connected to the scheme which started in 2012. Platinum quickly grew a reputation for exceptionally high returns with its largest fund paying out 17 percent annually. It seemed too good to be true and it was Court papers accuse Platinum execs of lying to clients about the value of funds they were managing and paying out favored customers ahead of others. The documents also allege that when the hedge fund started going south in 2015 Nordlicht contemplated fleeing the country. Being charged with financial negligence never looks good on a resume but doubly so when you_re the head of the International Monetary Fund IMF Chief Christine Lagarde_s future with the global organization is in jeopardy after a Paris court found her guilty in a 5-year investigation over a payout she made as French finance minister back in 2008. The surprise guilty verdict COULD have cost her a year in jail and a 13-thousand dollar fine. Instead it_s largely symbolic. IMF execs will meet in the near future to discuss her future with the agency. And China_s toxic smog problem has gone from bad to worse. Red alerts have been issued in at least 23 cities across the country this week with the government calling for the shutdown of roads and factories as well as cancelling hundreds of flights. Almost a ninth of the country is covered by the thick smog. On Monday evening in Beijing the air quality levels were slightly improved but were still EIGHT TIMES higher than the World Health Organization_s recommended maximum. Kenya_s ivory trade is on fire and not in the good way. To strike a blow to the illegal ivory trade which is decimating the world_s elephant population Kenyan officials set fire to 105 tons of ivory which equals the tusks of over 6-thousand elephants. Though many support the move some worry that it may encourage further poaching by making a scarce commodity even harder to find. The value of the ivory destroyed has been estimated to be over a hundred million dollars.And if there_s one thing scientists are still on the search for it_s the cure for the common weasel. The Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland which cost billions of dollars to make and was the site of one of the key discoveries in particle physics of our time had to be shut down after a weasel got into a transformer and caused an electrical outage. Sadly for the weasel he managed to weasel his way in but didn_t manage to weasel his way out. It_s hard to believe Kat. Kat Bill Cosby is heading back to court this time to face criminal charges. A judge ruled on Tuesday that there was sufficient evidence to move forward with three charges of aggravated sexual assault. Cosby is accused in this case of having drugged and sexually touched Andrea Constand a former Temple University employee in 2004. Cosby has denied all charges but if convicted the 78-year-old comedian could face up to ten years on jail for each charge. In other legal news eight of the world_s top modeling agencies are being taken to court by former clients in a class-action lawsuit. Some of the bombshell claims against them include sex for contracts pressure to lose weight and get cosmetic surgery as well as all kinds of fake fees. If successful the lawsuit would cost the agencies over 100 million dollars and could permanently change the way the industry operates. And with the warmer weather upon us you might be thinking about running off to the local public pool for a dip. But you might want to take note folks a recent study by the CDC found that nearly EIGHTY PER CENT of public pools had at least one safety violation. Kat it_s MORE bad news for Volkswagen The embattled car maker is being SUED by the US Federal Trade Commission. The government agency alleges that Volkswagen falsely advertised its vehicles as being environmentally friendly. The claim says that American customers suffered BILLIONS in injury because of their emissions scandal and the FTC wants Volkswagen to compensate them. The company is already facing a 46 billion dollar lawsuit from the US Justice Department as well as hundreds of civil claims. Two fake charities that raised more than 75 million in donations have been shut down Cancer Fund of America and Cancer Support Services claimed to help cancer patients but instead blew the money on employee perks and salaries. Two additional cancer charities were already closed last year. As part of a settlement with the FTC the remaining cash will be liquidized and its leaders banned from ever managing a charity again. And Microsoft_s take on Virtual Reality the HOLOLENS began shipping this week The headset projects computer generated images over a live view of what_s currently in your viewing range. Microsoft has already lined up big names like NASA and Minecraft to create demo apps. At the moment it_s JUST the developer_s version being released to generate new content. No word yet on when the CONSUMER version will drop Kat but I have a feeling you_re pretty giddy about this. The GOP convention opens in Cleveland Ohio.That_s right Eila all eyes are on The Forest City as Donald Trump is set to become the OFFICIAL republican nominee for President. It_s normally a tightly scripted affair but with Trump leading the way no one_s quite sure what to expect.He sure is making it interesting. But the ultimate goal is to unite a deeply divided Republican party. And that_s what will make the next few days so intriguing. Welcome to the newsroom everyone Melania Trump will headline the first night of the GOP convention. The theme for the evening will be Make America Safe Again. Trump_s son Eric and daughter Ivanka will also take to the podium this week. They hope to tell voters more about Trump the man not just the person people see on the campaign trail. Less traditional speakers at the event include Scott Baio Willie Robertson from Duck Dynasty and actress Kimberlin Brown from The Young and the Restless. Trump will officially accept the Republican party nomination on Thursday. Security has been a hot topic in the leadup to the convention. While items like tennis balls and large backpacks have been banned from the event zone Ohio_s open carry laws mean legal gun owners can carry firearms in plain site. Cleveland_s police union is lobbying for Ohio Governor John Kasich to suspend open carry rights because it makes safety at the convention much more difficult. Union president Steve Loomis says the law is completely irresponsible. In the wake of deadly shootings in Baton Rouge and Dallas the atmosphere outside of Quicken Loans Arena is expected to be tense. And with the race for the White House heating up the latest poll numbers show that Hillary Clinton still has a lead over Donald Trump - but it_s pretty close An NBCWall Street Journal national survey found Clinton had a five-point edge over her Republican rival on the eve of the GOP convention. Clinton has a huge advantage among African Americans young voters and women. Trump meanwhile holds a strong lead among whites and has more support from male voters. The poll was taken after the FBI strongly condemned Clinton_s email practices but before Trump picked Indiana governor Mike Pence as his running mate. This week in Cleveland will really give Trump a chance to alter perceptions about his leadership and close that gap Eila.ONE thing_s for sure Nat the entire country will be watching and so will we. Despite the stellar efforts highlighted by the Pulitzers a new survey shows the public_s trust in the media has fallen to an all-time low Only 6 PERCENT of Americans say they have a great deal of confidence in the press. The poll from the Media Insight Project reports that only about half of us have SOME confidence while a whopping 41 percent said they had hardly ANY confidence. So what would it take to restore out faith in news outlets? The most commonly cited concepts we value in media reporting were fairness balance accuracy and completeness. And finally porn is very very bad for you at least according to the state of Utah Republican Governor Gary Herbert signed a new resolution into law on Tuesday declaring pornography a public HEALTH crisis The measure doesn_t BAN the use of porn but instead recognizes the need for education and prevention due to porn_s so-called detrimental effects. The rallies reflect rising public frustrations about ongoing corruption investigations into her party and the fact that the Latin American country is currently going through its WORST recession in 25 years. An Egyptian blogger has been JAILED for comments he made about women and adultery. Taymour el-Sobky runs a popular Facebook page called Diaries of a Suffering Husband. During a recent TV appearance he caused public outrage when he claimed that up to 30 percent of women would willingly cheat on their husbands if they got the chance El-Sobky has been sentenced to 3 years in prison under charges of spreading false news. An appeal is scheduled for March 30th. And the illegal poaching of RHINOS is on the RISE according to new figures from conservation groups. There were more than 13-hundred rhinos killed for their horns in 2015 bringing the total number to nearly 6 THOUSAND since 2008. Officials point the finger at black market demand from South East Asia. Rhino horns are highly valued for medicinal purposes there and can sell for as much as 30 thousand dollars a pound Kat just to put those numbers into perspective there are now thought to be less than 29 THOUSAND rhinos remaining in the wild.Sobering figures and hopefully a call to action for local governments.
