Riois mayor said that estimating the number of casualties would be pure speculation at this point although at least 5 people were injured. Since this happened in the dead of night itis expected that the buildings would have been mostly deserted. This calamity comes as Rio is preparing for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.The owner of a French company that makes breast implants has been arrested amid safety concerns. Jean-Claude Mas (MASS) founder of the now-defunct company P.I.P. is being held at his home while police investigate. His company is accused of using low-grade silicone in breast implants that have a high risk of rupturing and leaking. Itis believed that up to 400-thousand women in 65 countries may have the at-risk implants. Mas apparently told police that he ordered his staff to hide the sub-par silicone from inspectors. He also claims that the silicone is perfectly safe and says that anyone filing a claim against him over the implants is simply in it for the money.Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard (GIH-lahrd) had quite a scare in Canberra (CAN-bare-ah) as she had to be literally pulled to safety by security staff. Hundreds of angry protesters had surrounded a restaurant where she was handing out medals in commemoration of Australia Day. However itis believed that opposition leader Tony Abbott not Gillard was the target of the protests. He had made disparaging comments about the Aboriginal Tent Embassy n a group of Aborigines who have lived in tents on the lawn of Parliament House for 40 years. Gillard lost a shoe in the incident but was otherwise unharmed. Timothy Geithner GITE-ner may be the US Treasury Secretary but heis not expecting to hold onto the job much longer. In a new interview with Bloomberg TV he strongly suggested his days would be numbered if President Barack Obama gets reelected. His exact words? ìIim confident heis going to have the privilege of having another Secretary of the Treasury.i That about sums it up Although Geithner has occupied the post since 2009 he nearly stepped down last August after Congress reached an agreement to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.And weill close out in the Middle East where exploratory talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are officially over. The goal of the meetings n which took place over several weeks in Jordan n was to find a mutually acceptable way to set up official peace negotiations. Unfortunately both sides were unable to get past several sticking points including Israelis refusal to stop building settlements in occupied areas. Israeli and Palestinian leaders have been under mounting international pressure to resolve their ongoing territorial disputes. Weill be right back.

Alana_s here with some details.The picture obviously isn_t pretty Laura. The effect it_s had on people and the economy is staggering. Even if you_re not in Texas you_ll be feeling the effect at the pump.Gas prices ALWAYS go up around Labor Day weekend but I_m assuming even MORE so this year.That_s right. I_ll have more on that in a moment. But first I_ve got some numbers for what_s sure to be the storm_s HISTORIC price tag. If the early projections are to be believed Laura Hurricane Harvey could be the the most expensive natural disaster in American history. This according to private firm AccuWeather. They put the cost of the storm at 160 BILLION dollars. That_s equal to the COMBINED costs of hurricanes Sandy and Katrina Houston is the fourth largest city in the country and parts of it will be uninhabitable for weeks or even months as crews deal with the water damage. Texas is oil country and the flood waters are having a major impact on production. 15 refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast have been forced to close due to flooding. That includes the Motiva plant in Port Arthur which is the largest in the US All told the factories account for a quarter of the nation_s refinery output and that means drivers will feel an extra squeeze at the pump this long weekend Gas prices nationwide are expected to increase by 15 to 25 cents per gallon And I hate to say it but Harvey isn_t the last major storm of Atlantic hurricane season. Tropical Storm Irma is now the 9th named storm and is gaining steam over the central Atlantic. Right now Irma is located about three thousand miles southeast of Miami. There_s no immediate threat to land but Irma_s expected to grow into a hurricane by the end of the week. If Irma does make landfall in the US the National Hurricane Center says it won_t be until after the long weekend. We_ll definitely keep an eye on it Don_t go away.

EA) US President Barack Obama touched on a number of hot topics Tuesday night - Wall Street reform health care education. But he started off by issuing a special challenge to Congress in regards to tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.Obama also talked tough when discussing US trade policies on the international scene - most notably in regards to China. The President called the Asian giant out on unfair trade practices and demanded that stricter guidelines be imposed to protect American consumers from unsafe goods.NO) With the US unemployment rate still hovering above the eight-percent mark Obama described America as a nation at a crossroads. He encouraged his fellow countrymen to restore the economy and create a state where everyone gets a fair shot and where everyone plays by the same set of rules. Pundits called it a politically shrewd speech that would satisfy The President_s Democratic supporters and win over some Independents. And despite the heavy laundry list of issues covered he managed to occasionally lighten the mood with a little humor.

But he couldn_t stop being a bro In fact Shkreli recently posted a five thousand dollar bounty for a strand of Hillary Clinton_s hair on Facebook That naturally led to a Secret Service investigation and a judge ordered the Pharma Bro jailed ruling he posed a danger to the public. The judge also noted that a solicitation of assault in exchange for money is NOT protected speech But don_t worry folks I_m sure Shkreli will do just fine in prison The impact of Hurricane Irma will continue to land most squarely on Florida but the ripple effect will touch us all. For instance Florida_s citrus industry has been particularly devastated. According to officials it_s estimated that there_s a 50 to 70 percent crop loss in South Florida. That_s terrible for the farmers plus given that Florida routinely grows about half of America_s orange juice I think we all might feel freshly squeezed for awhile. Bitcoin is having quite the year but JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon isn_t buying it...literally or figuratively Dimon one of the most influential voices in the financial community attacked Bitcoin at a recent conference. He called it a quote a fraud saying The currency isn_t going to work. Even if you_re not in Texas you_ll be feeling the effect at the pump.Gas prices ALWAYS go up around Labor Day weekend but I_m assuming even MORE so this year.That_s right. I_ll have more on that in a moment. But first I_ve got some numbers for what_s sure to be the storm_s HISTORIC price tag. If the early projections are to be believed Laura Hurricane Harvey could be the the most expensive natural disaster in American history. This according to private firm AccuWeather. They put the cost of the storm at 160 BILLION dollars. That_s equal to the COMBINED costs of hurricanes Sandy and Katrina Houston is the fourth largest city in the country and parts of it will be uninhabitable for weeks or even months as crews deal with the water damage. Texas is oil country and the flood waters are having a major impact on production. 15 refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast have been forced to close due to flooding. That includes the Motiva plant in Port Arthur which is the largest in the US All told the factories account for a quarter of the nation_s refinery output and that means drivers will feel an extra squeeze at the pump this long weekend Gas prices nationwide are expected to increase by 15 to 25 cents per gallon And I hate to say it but Harvey isn_t the last major storm of Atlantic hurricane season. Tropical Storm Irma is now the 9th named storm and is gaining steam over the central Atlantic. Right now Irma is located about three thousand miles southeast of Miami. There_s no immediate threat to land but Irma_s expected to grow into a hurricane by the end of the week. If Irma does make landfall in the US the National Hurricane Center says it won_t be until after the long weekend. We_ll definitely keep an eye on it Don_t go away.
