Now let_s get down to business The Iranian government has once again issued a threat that could wreak havoc on global oil supplies. For more on this developing story we_ll bring in Katherine Curtis. What_s going on over there Kat?KC) Eila you may recall the Iranian military shut down the Strait of Hormuz for military testing recently.EA) Of course - something like 40 percent of the world_s oil passes through those waters.KC) Right. Well a US aircraft carrier left the region during those drills and Iran has made it very clear that it ISN_T welcome back. KC) After 10 days of military exercises in the Strait of Hormuz (HOR-mooz) Iranian General Ataollah Salehi (ah-taw-oh-LAW saw-leh-HEE) is warning against the return of a US Navy aircraft carrier that left the region_s waters when the drills began last week. Salehi says that Iran is not in the habit of warning more than once. However the general did not provide specific details as to the actions the country would take if the American carrier returns to the Persian Gulf. Iran has already threatened to shut down the Strait altogether so tensions in the region are high. We_ll turn our gaze to Europe now where France has added its voice to the chorus of disapproval over Iran_s nuclear program. They_re urging other EU countries to follow the US lead in freezing Iranian bank assets and embargoing oil exports. This follows strict sanctions set in place by the US Canada and the UK late last year after the International Atomic Energy Agency claimed Iran was carrying out tests to develop nuclear weapons. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe (AAH-LAA(N) ZHOO-PAY) says he has no doubt about their nuclear ambitions. Elsewhere Hungary is the latest European country to be hit with protests in recent days. Tens of thousands lined the streets in Budapest to protest a controversial new constitution that took effect this year. It was pushed through last spring by the ruling Fidesz (FEE-dehs) party after they won a two-thirds election. Opponents say the new rules will remove checks and balances which in turn could threaten the democratic laws set in after the fall of communism in 1989. The protesters aren_t alone Eila - the US and the EU are also asking for the constitution to be reworked.EA) So what are some of the changes that have people worked up?KC) Well there_s the rewriting of their electoral rules which some people think favors the ruling Fidesz (FEE-dehs) party. And there_s some social issues included like pro-life and anti-gay-marriage clauses that aren_t going over very well. EA) It sounds pretty contentious we_ll be sure to keep everyone updated on any new developments. We_ll check back with you later Kat. Roxanne is standing by in the newsroom and she_s starting us off in China where a government decision is being hailed as a major win for animal rights activists. That_s right Kat China the world_s largest commercial ivory market is aiming to shut down ivory trading within its borders by the end of this year. For decades China has been the primary destination for the world_s ivory where it_s commonly used for carvings. The ivory trade has had a devastating effect on Africa_s elephant population. Just 25 years ago there were about a million elephants in Africa. Today that number has fallen to 350-thousand. In addition to barring trade within its borders China is pledging to crack down on illegal processing sites and crime syndicates that funnel money to poachers. 2017_s off to a great start for workers in France On Sunday the French government kicked off the new year by enacting a law that bans employees from having to respond to work-related emails outside of work hours Legislators are calling it the right to disconnect. The goal is to prevent employee burnout. French officials cited studies showing that workers who checked their email throughout the day had higher stress levels than those who did not. Workers in France already had it pretty good - the country is home to a famously short 35-hour work week And if that doesn_t make you want to move to France maybe you_d prefer Finland. The country_s government has started a radical new experiment. It_s giving 2-thousand citizens a GUARANTEED income. They_ll get 587 dollars a month regardless of income wealth or employment status. Participants in the study were selected at random but had to already be receiving unemployment benefits. Finland_s welfare system is complex and expensive and the hope is that simplifying the system will actually save money in the long run. Laura joins us now to tell us about some of the damage it left in its wake.Alana Irma will spend the next few days moving through Georgia Alabama and Tennessee but the Caribbean and Florida have already been devastatedI can only imagine The footage I_ve seen so far has been horrifyingWell the good news is that the storm itself has weakend considerably but sadly the recovery is only getting started Here_s the latest. If pictures are worth a thousand words pictures of flooding are certainly enough to leave you speechless. Obviously destroyed buildings are very hard to look at but nothing makes the situation clearer than watching virtual rivers running through the streets of a major city. And the footage coming out of downtown Miami is unbelievable That_s hard to look at but also very hard not to look at It_s crazy to see the pretty downtown Brickell neighborhood so devastated but at least we can be grateful not to have seen people in those shots Of course before any recovery can really begin there are serious infrastructure issues to deal with. Specifically Florida_s going to need its power back According to Governor Rick Scott_s office nearly 6 MILLION customers are currently without power. On top of that FEMA administrator Brock Long has already said that several places will be without electricity for WEEKS Given that power lines are reportedly down in 80 percent of Miami ALONE even that seems optimistic In order to begin the recovery Miami-Dade_s Mayor has issued a curfew. Except for official personnel including Florida Power & Light employees the county curfew will run nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Some cities within Miami-Dade County are going with even stricter curfews than that with Miami Beach saying people will not be allowed onto the island before noon on Tuesday. Normally I_m against any kind of curfew... but in these unique circumstances I think I_ll give the government a pass We_ll be right back.

That_s right Kat China the world_s largest commercial ivory market is aiming to shut down ivory trading within its borders by the end of this year. For decades China has been the primary destination for the world_s ivory where it_s commonly used for carvings. The ivory trade has had a devastating effect on Africa_s elephant population. Just 25 years ago there were about a million elephants in Africa. Today that number has fallen to 350-thousand. In addition to barring trade within its borders China is pledging to crack down on illegal processing sites and crime syndicates that funnel money to poachers. 2017_s off to a great start for workers in France On Sunday the French government kicked off the new year by enacting a law that bans employees from having to respond to work-related emails outside of work hours Legislators are calling it the right to disconnect. The goal is to prevent employee burnout. French officials cited studies showing that workers who checked their email throughout the day had higher stress levels than those who did not. Workers in France already had it pretty good - the country is home to a famously short 35-hour work week And if that doesn_t make you want to move to France maybe you_d prefer Finland. The country_s government has started a radical new experiment. It_s giving 2-thousand citizens a GUARANTEED income. They_ll get 587 dollars a month regardless of income wealth or employment status. Participants in the study were selected at random but had to already be receiving unemployment benefits. Finland_s welfare system is complex and expensive and the hope is that simplifying the system will actually save money in the long run. Obviously destroyed buildings are very hard to look at but nothing makes the situation clearer than watching virtual rivers running through the streets of a major city. And the footage coming out of downtown Miami is unbelievable That_s hard to look at but also very hard not to look at It_s crazy to see the pretty downtown Brickell neighborhood so devastated but at least we can be grateful not to have seen people in those shots Of course before any recovery can really begin there are serious infrastructure issues to deal with. Specifically Florida_s going to need its power back According to Governor Rick Scott_s office nearly 6 MILLION customers are currently without power. On top of that FEMA administrator Brock Long has already said that several places will be without electricity for WEEKS Given that power lines are reportedly down in 80 percent of Miami ALONE even that seems optimistic In order to begin the recovery Miami-Dade_s Mayor has issued a curfew. Except for official personnel including Florida Power & Light employees the county curfew will run nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Some cities within Miami-Dade County are going with even stricter curfews than that with Miami Beach saying people will not be allowed onto the island before noon on Tuesday. Normally I_m against any kind of curfew... but in these unique circumstances I think I_ll give the government a pass We_ll be right back.
