At least 9 people died when the Sasago tunnel gave way, trapping motorists and starting a fire. While no definite cause has been identified for the collapse, officials suggest that metal rods might have loosened, causing concrete panels to fall. In the wake of the disaster, Japanese officials will be inspecting at least 20 other tunnels that are the same age and design. The company that owns the tunnel has carried out basic visual safety inspections, but the most recent one 2 months ago didn_t indicate any imminent danger. Despite overthrowing a dictator last year, Egypt_s road to a new government is still rocky. President Mohammed Morsi continues to face stiff opposition in his efforts to draft a new constitution. Katherine Curtis has been following the story and she_s got the latest details. Kat?Laura, Egyptian judges are refusing to oversee a referendum on the draft of the new constitution. This comes on the heels of the court being forbidden to rule on the body responsible for putting the draft together. Opponents of the draft say the new constitution is illegal and undermines basic freedoms. As it is now, the draft defines controversial Islamic Sharia law as the main source of legislation. It also restricts religious freedom to Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Morsi_s opponents, including the coalition known as the National Salvation Front, calls the impending referendum irresponsible and the constitution illegitimate.It just got a WHOLE lot more messy Laura.Yeah no kidding. So what exactly does this mean to Morsi, Kat?Well, it looks like the protests will continue. Opposition groups are upset that he_s called for this referendum in 2 weeks without getting widespread approval of the constitution. Plus everyone_s still upset about how he recently gave himself pretty broad, sweeping powers. Needless to say, this is a developing story, thank you very much Kat.Elsewhere in the Middle East, over the weekend the UN upgraded Palestine_s status to that of a non-member observer state. Predictably, Israel isn_t happy about it and is making a controversial move that isn_t sitting well with many other countries. Eila Adams is standing by with more. What_s going on Eila?Laura, Israel has approved the construction of 3000 new homes in the disputed areas of the West bank and East Jerusalem. Palestinians strenuously oppose any such construction, as they feel it would prevent their goal of creating a state with a shared, common border. International observers are furious over the move as well, with Britain, France, and Sweden all summoning their Israeli ambassadors in protest. Russia and Gerrmany also expressed their opposition. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon says the construction will deal an almost fatal blow to any hopes for peace in the region. And rather than weakening as it approaches land, it appears that Sandy is getting even stronger, with sustained winds hitting 85 miles per hour. Making things potentially WORSE Kat, the Frankenstorm is expected to collide with a winter storm AND a cold front.Now I understand the storm_s economic impact could be pretty significant as well Eila.BIG TIME Kat. The New York Stock Exchange is completely shut down. And for those of you into other forms of legal gambling, so are the casinos in Atlantic City.That_s a LOT of money that isn_t changing hands. I understand that even the presidential election campaigns are being affected. That_s right. Both candidates have canceled stops in crucial swing states due to Sandy. Mitt Romney has pulled out of an engagement in Virginia, while President Obama will miss an appearance in Ohio. The President is remaining in Washington so he can monitor the storm_s progress. He visited FEMA and promised Americans that the agency would respond big and respond fast in the wake of any serious damage. Central Japan is reeling after a tunnel collapsed 50 miles west of Tokyo. At least 9 people died when the Sasago tunnel gave way, trapping motorists and starting a fire. While no definite cause has been identified for the collapse, officials suggest that metal rods might have loosened, causing concrete panels to fall. In the wake of the disaster, Japanese officials will be inspecting at least 20 other tunnels that are the same age and design. The company that owns the tunnel has carried out basic visual safety inspections, but the most recent one 2 months ago didn_t indicate any imminent danger. Despite overthrowing a dictator last year, Egypt_s road to a new government is still rocky. President Mohammed Morsi continues to face stiff opposition in his efforts to draft a new constitution. Katherine Curtis has been following the story and she_s got the latest details. Kat?Laura, Egyptian judges are refusing to oversee a referendum on the draft of the new constitution. This comes on the heels of the court being forbidden to rule on the body responsible for putting the draft together. Opponents of the draft say the new constitution is illegal and undermines basic freedoms. As it is now, the draft defines controversial Islamic Sharia law as the main source of legislation. It also restricts religious freedom to Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Morsi_s opponents, including the coalition known as the National Salvation Front, calls the impending referendum irresponsible and the constitution illegitimate.It just got a WHOLE lot more messy Laura.Yeah no kidding. So what exactly does this mean to Morsi, Kat?Well, it looks like the protests will continue. Opposition groups are upset that he_s called for this referendum in 2 weeks without getting widespread approval of the constitution. Plus everyone_s still upset about how he recently gave himself pretty broad, sweeping powers. Needless to say, this is a developing story, thank you very much Kat.Elsewhere in the Middle East, over the weekend the UN upgraded Palestine_s status to that of a non-member observer state. Predictably, Israel isn_t happy about it and is making a controversial move that isn_t sitting well with many other countries. Eila Adams is standing by with more. What_s going on Eila?Laura, Israel has approved the construction of 3000 new homes in the disputed areas of the West bank and East Jerusalem. Palestinians strenuously oppose any such construction, as they feel it would prevent their goal of creating a state with a shared, common border. International observers are furious over the move as well, with Britain, France, and Sweden all summoning their Israeli ambassadors in protest. Russia and Gerrmany also expressed their opposition. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon says the construction will deal an almost fatal blow to any hopes for peace in the region. How bad does it look out there Eila?Not great, Kat.Several states, including New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut have declared emergencies, shutting down schools and transportation services. Meteorologists are warning that Hurricane Sandy could develop into a super storm when it makes landfall. International flights into Boston, Washington DC, New York, Philadelphia, and other cities have all been canceled. The storm has already left 60 dead after tearing its way through the Caribbean. And rather than weakening as it approaches land, it appears that Sandy is getting even stronger, with sustained winds hitting 85 miles per hour. Making things potentially WORSE Kat, the Frankenstorm is expected to collide with a winter storm AND a cold front.Now I understand the storm_s economic impact could be pretty significant as well Eila.BIG TIME Kat. The New York Stock Exchange is completely shut down. And for those of you into other forms of legal gambling, so are the casinos in Atlantic City.That_s a LOT of money that isn_t changing hands. I understand that even the presidential election campaigns are being affected. That_s right. Both candidates have canceled stops in crucial swing states due to Sandy. Mitt Romney has pulled out of an engagement in Virginia, while President Obama will miss an appearance in Ohio. The President is remaining in Washington so he can monitor the storm_s progress. He visited FEMA and promised Americans that the agency would respond big and respond fast in the wake of any serious damage. Speaking of the election, with just a week to go it_s still anybody_s race In the battleground state of Ohio, a CNNORC International survey has Obama with a 4-point lead over Romney. But another poll from the Ohio Newspaper Association has the candidates tied at 49-percent.
