I_m Peyton PriestlyAnd I_m Marina Valmont , welcome to Naked News.Our top story today comes out of Syria where the 18-month battle against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad shows no sign of ending.Rebels have just attacked the country_s military headquarters in Damascus with 2 HUGE bombs.Here_s the storyOfficials there say that one of the blasts damaged a key building. Of course, in typical fashion, both sides have differing reports on the overall toll. The Free Syrian Army, which has claimed responsibility for the attack, says that the bombs killed dozens of military personnel.However, Syrian state TV claims there were no fatalities. Reports say that the blasts shook buildings up to half a mile away. During the 18 month conflict, it_s estimated that 27-thousand people have lost their lives. Iran has unveiled yet another new military tool, an unmanned drone. The Shahed 129 drone was created in Iran, has a range of over 12-hundred miles, and can be equipped with bombs and missiles. They claim the drone will be capable of both reconnaissance and combat missions.This comes after Iran claims they brought down an unmanned American RQ-170 Sentinel drone last year. Iran later said they were trying to reverse-engineer it to create their own version. It isn_t clear yet if the Shahed is similar in any way to the Sentinel.US President Barack Obama has spoken out against human trafficking. He called it modern slavery and an outrage. He made the comments speaking at a forum organized by former President Bill Clinton in New York. Obama also called the practice barbaric and evil with no place in a civilized world. Obama went on to tell the Clinton Global Initiative that the White House was unveiling new measures to curb human trafficking. There will be new guidelines in government contracting, and training for prosecutors, judges, and police in how to crack down on the practice. Victims of human trafficking include girls sold into the sex trade and abused workers who make nearly no money. Long overdue if you ask me Marina.Let_s hope it makes a difference. The 173-billion dollar package will help the troubled country avoid defaulting on their debts next month. This comes after the Greek government had to agree to some strict austerity measures, including huge cuts to spending, pensions, and wages.But they_re not out of the woods yet. They have to try and trim their debt to 121% of their gross domestic product by 2020. Right now, it_s at an alarming 160-percent of their GDP. RW) Elsewhere in the world, China is blaming Western countries for the bloody unrest that continues in Syria. They say that Western support of the Syrian opposition could lead to a full-scale civil war. Eila Adams has been following this story and joins us now with the latest. It_s a pretty startling accusation Eila.EA) To say the LEAST Rachelle. China went on to say that if a full-scale civil war breaks out, the west will be to blame for the inevitable intervention by foreign forces. A Chinese envoy met with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad (bah-SHAHR ahl-ah-SAHD) and backed his plan to hold a referendum on a new constitution this weekend, which would lead to multi-party elections. Meanwhile, Western countries and the Syrian opposition say a referendum would be meaningless, as there would be no way to have a corruption-free election given the state of the country.And if the rising price of gas has you concerned then you better brace yourself, because Oil has spiked to a nine-month high. The main reason is that Iran has halted all oil exports to France and the UK. There are further rumors that Iran_s oil embargo could spread to other European countries. Prices rose to over a 105-dollars a barrel, and if the embargo extends to the rest of the EU, analysts say prices could skyrocket to 150-dollars a barrel. Iran_s Oil Minister says this is a response to sanctions imposed against hostile nations that oppose their nuclear program. The 27 countries in the EU account for nearly one-fifth of Iran_s oil exports. Back to you Rachelle.RW) So that_s the long term effect of an embargo. But how bad will this first step affect the UK and France, Eila?EA) It should be negligible, Rachelle. France gets just 3 percent of their oil from Iran - and the UK hasn_t accepted any in six months.RW) So, it_s like a shop-owner banning a customer who never shops there in the first place.EA) (chuckles) Pretty much. VS) I_m Victoria Sinclair and you_re inside the naked newsroom.We begin today in the US where President Barack Obama_s administration has blocked a divisive (dih-VY-siv) new law in Texas that would require voters to present identification before going to the polls. The bill_s supporters say it would help cut down on voter fraud. However the US Justice Department says the law would discriminate against Hispanics and other minorities. The department also added that there is little to no evidence of any wrongdoing at the polls. There is precedent for this type of action. The federal government stopped a similar law from passing in South Carolina last December. Turning out attention to the Middle East now, where four days of deadly clashes between Israeli forces and militant groups in the Gaza strip have finally come to a halt. The two sides have agreed to a truce - at least for now. With the latest we_ll turn things over to Rachelle Wilde.RW) Vic an Egypt-brokered ceasefire has been agreed to, and there haven_t been any rocket or airstrike attacks since very early Tuesday morning. The truce came after calls from the US, the EU, and the United Nations for both sides to show some restraint. At least 25 Palestinians were killed and 35 Israelis injured in the attacks. Though Israel officials say that number would have been far higher if not for their impressive new Iron Dome missile-defense system, which they say intercepted 50 rockets. RW) In other news, six more arrests have been made in the UK in connection to the News International phone hacking scandal. The suspects, including former chief executive Rebekah Brooks, are being held on charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. It_s the second time Brooks has been detained in the police probe, dubbed Operation Weeting. She was arrested last July on suspicion of intercepting communications, and was released on bail. Brooks_ husband Charlie was also among the six brought in for questioning Vic. VS) So the charge is conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. (smile) Mind telling us what that means exactly?RW) (laughs) It_s really just a fancy way of saying that police could be looking at a possible coverup of the scope of the phone hacking.VS) Ah, so the plot thickens for Mrs. Brooks And what about her husband?RW) His role here isn_t clear just yet. He_s a prominent horse breeder who writes for the Daily Telegraph. Speaking before the National Urban League in New Orleans, the President said he understood and respected the nation_s Second Amendment rights, but urged common sense when it comes to gun ownership.The President also called for more rigorous background checks and the prevention of mentally unbalanced individuals from getting guns. Up until the Aurora incident, Obama had largely avoided the gun control debate. The Aurora incident has sparked a nationwide debate on the merits of gun control. Some advocates feel that a legally armed citizen could have prevented the shootings. Others feel that guns should be outlawed completely. But there_s been another interesting side effect in the wake of the incident, and guest anchor Marina is here to tell us what it is. Marina?Eila, surprisingly or unsurprisingly, depending on your viewpoint, the Aurora massacre has triggered a surge in gun sales across the US. Background checks for firearms in Colorado spiked by 25 percent in the 3 days after the incident, and enrollment in some concealed-weapons programs has doubled. June and July are normally the slowest months for gun sales stateside. Instead, gun stores across the country have been enjoying one of the most profitable weeks on record.Back on the political front, Mitt Romney is officially on his first overseas tour. First stop: Great Britain, where the Republican candidate will attend the opening of the London Olympics and meet with Prime Minister David Cameron. From there, he_ll travel to Poland and Israel to gather with their respective heads of state. Although not expected to talk policy, Romney is said to be using the trip as an opportunity to represent the U.S. on an international level. Eila, many political analysts are encouraging the move, noting that the former Massachusetts governor has a perceived weakness with regards to foreign policy experience. With the presidential race still neck-and-neck, I_ll be curious if Romney_s mini-tour will help the numbers break one way or another. It may be too soon to tell but ONE thing_s for sure, his every word will be scrutinized so if he screws up, it_s going to be BIG news. Something the Obama campaign would LOVE I_m sure. Thank you ladies, both Russia and the US are PRAISING the country of Georgia after an election that will deliver its first democratic transfer of power since the Soviet era. President Mikheil Saakashvili has conceded defeat to his rival, Bidzina Ivanishvili, leader of the Georgian Dream coalition. For the second night in a row, Georgian Dream supporters celebrated in the capital. Russia expressed pleasure with the results, hoping to improve ties with Georgia after 2008_s Russian-Georgian war. Both the US and the European Union are praising the election as a milestone in Georgia_s democratic development and a sign of respect for freedom. In other news, the US military has started gathering information on militant targets in Libya. Speaking anonymously, a senior US official has confirmed that they_re preparing intel on targets should President Obama order a strike. The source also said that they would likely seek cooperation with the Libyan government before any action was taken. This comes after extremists attacked the US consulate in Benghazi last month, killing 4 including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. The US believes that the attack was carried out by militants who are sympathetic to al-Qaeda, if not directly affiliated. And a new report says that European nuclear power plants are in such disrepair, it_s going to cost around 32 BILLION dollars to fix them The report had initially been commissioned in the wake of Japan_s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. A draft of the final report says that almost every one of the 143 nuclear plants in the EU needs some form of repair. In some cases, reactors would have under an hour to restore safety functions if the electricity failed. Also making headlines today, a Pennsylvania judge has put the brakes on a new law imposing strict I.D. requirements for voters. Although the case may still be brought to the state_s Supreme Court, it_s unlikely such a move would take place before next month_s presidential election. Democrats are celebrating the ruling, having spent weeks arguing the law was a right-wing tactic geared at preventing minorities from voting. Earlier this summer, a member of the statue legislature told a Republican dinner the law would quote, allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania.i We_ll be right back.

The bill_s supporters say it would help cut down on voter fraud. However the US Justice Department says the law would discriminate against Hispanics and other minorities. The department also added that there is little to no evidence of any wrongdoing at the polls. There is precedent for this type of action. The federal government stopped a similar law from passing in South Carolina last December. Turning out attention to the Middle East now, where four days of deadly clashes between Israeli forces and militant groups in the Gaza strip have finally come to a halt. The two sides have agreed to a truce - at least for now. With the latest we_ll turn things over to Rachelle Wilde.RW) Vic an Egypt-brokered ceasefire has been agreed to, and there haven_t been any rocket or airstrike attacks since very early Tuesday morning. The truce came after calls from the US, the EU, and the United Nations for both sides to show some restraint. At least 25 Palestinians were killed and 35 Israelis injured in the attacks. Though Israel officials say that number would have been far higher if not for their impressive new Iron Dome missile-defense system, which they say intercepted 50 rockets. RW) In other news, six more arrests have been made in the UK in connection to the News International phone hacking scandal. The suspects, including former chief executive Rebekah Brooks, are being held on charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. It_s the second time Brooks has been detained in the police probe, dubbed Operation Weeting. She was arrested last July on suspicion of intercepting communications, and was released on bail. Brooks_ husband Charlie was also among the six brought in for questioning Vic. VS) So the charge is conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Speaking before the National Urban League in New Orleans, the President said he understood and respected the nation_s Second Amendment rights, but urged common sense when it comes to gun ownership.The President also called for more rigorous background checks and the prevention of mentally unbalanced individuals from getting guns. Up until the Aurora incident, Obama had largely avoided the gun control debate. The Aurora incident has sparked a nationwide debate on the merits of gun control. Some advocates feel that a legally armed citizen could have prevented the shootings. Others feel that guns should be outlawed completely. But there_s been another interesting side effect in the wake of the incident, and guest anchor Marina is here to tell us what it is. Marina?Eila, surprisingly or unsurprisingly, depending on your viewpoint, the Aurora massacre has triggered a surge in gun sales across the US. Background checks for firearms in Colorado spiked by 25 percent in the 3 days after the incident, and enrollment in some concealed-weapons programs has doubled. June and July are normally the slowest months for gun sales stateside. Instead, gun stores across the country have been enjoying one of the most profitable weeks on record.Back on the political front, Mitt Romney is officially on his first overseas tour. First stop: Great Britain, where the Republican candidate will attend the opening of the London Olympics and meet with Prime Minister David Cameron. From there, he_ll travel to Poland and Israel to gather with their respective heads of state. Although not expected to talk policy, Romney is said to be using the trip as an opportunity to represent the U.S. on an international level. Eila, many political analysts are encouraging the move, noting that the former Massachusetts governor has a perceived weakness with regards to foreign policy experience. With the presidential race still neck-and-neck, I_ll be curious if Romney_s mini-tour will help the numbers break one way or another. President Mikheil Saakashvili has conceded defeat to his rival, Bidzina Ivanishvili, leader of the Georgian Dream coalition. For the second night in a row, Georgian Dream supporters celebrated in the capital. Russia expressed pleasure with the results, hoping to improve ties with Georgia after 2008_s Russian-Georgian war. Both the US and the European Union are praising the election as a milestone in Georgia_s democratic development and a sign of respect for freedom. In other news, the US military has started gathering information on militant targets in Libya. Speaking anonymously, a senior US official has confirmed that they_re preparing intel on targets should President Obama order a strike. The source also said that they would likely seek cooperation with the Libyan government before any action was taken. This comes after extremists attacked the US consulate in Benghazi last month, killing 4 including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. The US believes that the attack was carried out by militants who are sympathetic to al-Qaeda, if not directly affiliated. And a new report says that European nuclear power plants are in such disrepair, it_s going to cost around 32 BILLION dollars to fix them The report had initially been commissioned in the wake of Japan_s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. A draft of the final report says that almost every one of the 143 nuclear plants in the EU needs some form of repair. In some cases, reactors would have under an hour to restore safety functions if the electricity failed. Also making headlines today, a Pennsylvania judge has put the brakes on a new law imposing strict I.D. requirements for voters. Although the case may still be brought to the state_s Supreme Court, it_s unlikely such a move would take place before next month_s presidential election. Democrats are celebrating the ruling, having spent weeks arguing the law was a right-wing tactic geared at preventing minorities from voting.
