One official says the entire apartment building would have been engulfed in flames by the time fire trucks arrived. On the political front, the vitriolic ads on both sides of the US Presidential election are taking a clear toll on the candidates. According to a poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal, both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have seen their very negative ratings hit record highs. And Romney has a net rating of negative, which hasn_t happened with any other Republican candidate in recent history. Overall, Obama is inching ahead amongst registered voters n polling at a 6-percent lead over Romney, up 3-percent from last month. But the majority of those polled still say they think less of BOTH candidates after what they_ve seen and heard recently. Good luck, gentlemen. North of the border, Canada is experiencing it_s lowest crime rate since 1972. According to stats from 2011, there were just under 2 million crimes reported. That_s a drop, nationwide, of 6-percent, from the year before. Official numbers say that crime peaked in Canada in 1991, but has been decreasing ever since. The US State Department has struck a deal with North Korea that will see the rogue state halt all nuclear tests, uranium enrichment, and long-range missile drills, and allow UN inspectors access to their nuclear facilities. In exchange, the US will provide 240-thousand tonsi worth of food aid to the country. The move has sparked cautious optimism for renewed six-party disarmament talks. North Korea has refused to negotiate since the last round of discussions fell apart in 2009.Score another win for Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Heis won a non-binding vote in Wyoming that took place over the last two weeks. Romney won 39 percent of the vote while his close rival, Rick Santorum, took home 32 percent. However since there are no delegates awarded in Wyoming, winning the state is considered a symbolic victory. And although Romney narrowly won the popular vote on Tuesday night in Michigan, he and Santorum wound up splitting the stateis thirty delegates. Chalk one up for the tobacco industry. A judge in Washington has thrown out a controversial mandate requiring graphic warning images on tobacco products. According to federal Judge Richard Leon, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act violated the First Amendment. The warnings in question contain some strong pictures, including diseased organs, alongside warnings like ìCigarettes cause fatal lung diseasei. A collection of tobacco companies had sued, saying that the warnings would be expensive and damage their brands. There was also a question about the accuracy of the warnings, versus simply scaring consumers away from the products, which let_s be honest, wouldn_t be such a bad idea. Senior anchor Victoria Sinclair has been following the latest developments and joins us now for the story. I don_t think anyone was surprised by this were they Vic? VS) Not at all Eila but ONE thing that DID surprise people was that Nine of the 75 charged are police officers. The charges vary from murder to negligence in connection to the deadly Port Said (sy-EED) riots that erupted on February first. According to the chief prosecutor_s office, the violence was planned ahead of time, with many fans bringing knives, sticks, and other weapons to the stadium. The riot started after the final whistle of a game between Port Said_s club and a team from Cairo. The home crowd stormed the field, attacking the visiting team_s fans and players. In the aftermath, police were widely accused of doing little to curb the violence. In other news today, British paper, The Guardian, has obtained thousands of emails purportedly from the private email account of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad (ba-SHAR al ah-SAHD). The documents show that Assad got advice from Iran on how to deal with the uprising in his country. The President was advised to use violent language in his public addresses and tout the country_s military prowess. In other exchanges, Assad jokes about promises he made for reform, and is given detailed information about the whereabouts of illegal western reporters working within Syrian borders. And a former Goldman Sachs executive resigned in spectacular fashion. Instead of handing his bosses a letter, Greg Smith opted to have his resignation letter published as an op-ed piece in the New York Times - and boy oh boy, did he ever GIVE it to his former colleagues. In his letter, Smith called the company toxic, and alleged that they callously ripped their clients off - clients he says that were referred to as Muppets. Goldman executives and spokespeople refuted these claims, but not before the piece went viral on the Internet. A judge in Washington has thrown out a controversial mandate requiring graphic warning images on tobacco products. According to federal Judge Richard Leon, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act violated the First Amendment. The warnings in question contain some strong pictures, including diseased organs, alongside warnings like ìCigarettes cause fatal lung diseasei. A collection of tobacco companies had sued, saying that the warnings would be expensive and damage their brands. There was also a question about the accuracy of the warnings, versus simply scaring consumers away from the products, which let_s be honest, wouldn_t be such a bad idea. VS) Not at all Eila but ONE thing that DID surprise people was that Nine of the 75 charged are police officers. The charges vary from murder to negligence in connection to the deadly Port Said (sy-EED) riots that erupted on February first. According to the chief prosecutor_s office, the violence was planned ahead of time, with many fans bringing knives, sticks, and other weapons to the stadium. The riot started after the final whistle of a game between Port Said_s club and a team from Cairo. The home crowd stormed the field, attacking the visiting team_s fans and players. In the aftermath, police were widely accused of doing little to curb the violence. In other news today, British paper, The Guardian, has obtained thousands of emails purportedly from the private email account of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad (ba-SHAR al ah-SAHD). The documents show that Assad got advice from Iran on how to deal with the uprising in his country. The President was advised to use violent language in his public addresses and tout the country_s military prowess. In other exchanges, Assad jokes about promises he made for reform, and is given detailed information about the whereabouts of illegal western reporters working within Syrian borders. And a former Goldman Sachs executive resigned in spectacular fashion. Instead of handing his bosses a letter, Greg Smith opted to have his resignation letter published as an op-ed piece in the New York Times - and boy oh boy, did he ever GIVE it to his former colleagues. In his letter, Smith called the company toxic, and alleged that they callously ripped their clients off - clients he says that were referred to as Muppets. Goldman executives and spokespeople refuted these claims, but not before the piece went viral on the Internet.
