He was convicted in March of recruiting, conscripting, and using child soldiers as part of his militia in 2002 and 2003 during bloody conflicts in the Eastern Congo. Prosecutors had been asking for a 30-year sentence for the 51-year-old warlord, but had said they_d settle for 20 if he offered a, quote, genuine apology.With pre-trial custody factored in, Lubanga will only spend another 8 years in prison. While he was actually given 3 sentences of between 12 and 14 years, he_ll serve them concurrently. Lubanga showed no emotion as the sentencing was handed down. Infighting between President Mohammed Morsi and the military may be putting Egypt_s democratic transition at risk. The newly-elected leader is locked in conflict with the nation_s powerful armed forces over whether the legislature should reconvene.A recent Supreme Court ruling helped bring Morsi into power on condition that the Egyptian parliament, which was dominated by his Muslim Brotherhood Party, be dissolved. The standoff caps nearly a year and a half of political strife that eventually resulted in the ousting of longtime leader Hosni Bubarak.Finance ministers in the Eurozone have agreed to let Spain borrow 37-billion dollars to help bail out their troubled banks. This would be the first installment of an earlier bailout agreement of up to 120-billion dollars that they_d already agreed upon last month. It_s not a done deal just yet though. The ministers have to get approval from their individual governments first. It_s still unknown exactly how much will be needed to rescue the Spanish banks. The ministers also agreed to extend a deadline for Spain to slash its budget deficit from 2013 to 2014. Representatives from 193 countries have convened in the big apple for the 2012 United Nations General Assembly. Not surprisingly, the man getting much of the media spotlight is U.S. President Barack Obama. With more, here_s Victoria Sinclair and Erica Stevens in the newsroom. Thanks Eila. Obama took a measured-yet-forceful stance in his speech, once again condemning the recent wave of Islamic violence stemming from the controversial _Innocence of Muslims_ Internet video. The President certainly didn_t mince words, stating quote, There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon or cause death and destruction in Pakistan.Obama also reaffirmed the United States_ commitment to ensuring Iran does not pose any threat to Israeli sovereignty. Speaking to the dozens of world leaders gathered at the assembly, he pledged that a multi-country coalition will exercise all available options to prevent the Middle Eastern nation from obtaining nuclear weapons. Not surprisingly, Obama_s comments were in stark contrast to those made by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad before reporters at the UN assembly. The contentious Iranian president spoke bluntly about the legitimacy of his Israeli neighbors, saying quote, Iran has been Iran for the last seven to ten thousand years. Israelis have been occupying that territory for 60 years - they have no roots there in history. Ahmadinejad also stressed that an Israeli attack on his country could have dire consequences for U.S. bases stationed in the Middle East. That said, he did walk back his comments from several years ago suggesting Israel should be wiped off the map. Instead, the president stressed he simply wants the Jewish state to change its aggressive behavior. And lastly, the World Health Organization has put out a global alert over what it fears is a newly-discovered SARS-like illness. The severe respiratory infection is believed to be a specific strain of coronavirus. It has been found in two people this year, most recently in a 49-year-old Qatari man traveling to Saudi Arabia. The unnamed man is currently quarantined at a hospital in London, England, where his condition has been listed as critical. Viral specialists caution that with only two known cases of the illness, it_s still too early to tell whether it could eventually expand into a full-blown epidemic. Well, having dealt firsthand with the SARS hysteria in Toronto back in 2003, I can only hope this new illness doesn_t spread any further. It_s another black eye for education in America as 30,000 Chicago teachers have gone on strike. Their union had negotiated with school officials for 10 months, but they weren_t able to come to an agreement. This is Chicago_s first teacher strike in 25 years. As a result, police are beefing up their operations as 400-thousand students have nowhere to go. Some schools and community organizations are opening the doors in order to provide some kind of relief for frazzled parents.Three separate polls after the Democratic National Convention show that President Obama_s popularity has risen slightly since the big event. According to a Rasmussen poll, Obama has a 2 point lead over Mitt Romney n 46 to 44 percent. That same poll had Romney with a 3 point lead just last week. However, experts warn that Obama shouldn_t start doing victory laps just yet. History has shown that post-convention bumps almost always vanish, meaning that this remains anybody_s race. And the Obama campaign got even more positive news. For the first time in months, they_ve managed to raise more money than the Republicans. According to Obama campaign manager Jim Messina, in August they managed to collect 114 million dollars, versus 111 million for the Romney camp. Over a million people donated to the re-election campaign last month alone. In a sign of grass-roots support for the President, 98-percent of those donations were under 250 dollars, with an average of 58 dollars each. We_ll be right back. Details on a confidential UN report concerning the situation in Syria have gone public.ES) And the document claims that the Syrian government has been getting help from another not-so-popular player on the global scene.VS) Here_s the story. 1. VS) A new report from the UN points the finger at Iran for exporting weapons to the Syrian government, a clear violation of a ban on weapon sales. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a diplomat with knowledge of the as-yet unreleased report told reporters that three shipments of Iranian weapons - two of which bound for Syria - had been intercepted.ES) The report will be submitted to and reviewed by the United Nations Security Council, and could lead to further sanctions against Iran. Despite four rounds of sanctions since 2006, the rogue state has continued with its uranium enrichment program, maintaining that its aimed only at producing nuclear energy and not weaponry.2. VS) Meanwhile in the Hague, the long-awaited trial of alleged war criminal Ratko Mladic (RAT-ko MLAD-itch) has come to a screeching halt after just two days. The presiding judge has delayed the case because of quote significant disclosure errors by prosecutors, who failed to provide all of their evidence to Mladic_s defense team.ES) Mladic_s attorneys have requested a six-month delay, but the judge aims to have a new starting date as soon as possible. The 70-year old former general of the Bosnian Serb army stands accused of leading Europe_s worst massacre since the Second World War. 3. VS) The April fundraising tally is out, and the Obama campaign along with the democratic party, managed to raise a hefty 43.6 million dollars. Although somewhat surprisingly, that number is down nearly 10 million from the previous month. ES) Meanwhile, Mitt Romney has some reasons to celebrate of his own. The presumed Republican candidate pulled in a healthy 40 million dollars last month - over three times the amount raised in March. That figure includes money generated for Romney_s 2012 campaign, as well as the _Romney Victory Fund,_ which is a joint fundraising effort with the Republican National Committee. VS) A high-ranking member of Bashar al Assad government has resigned and jumped ship to support the rebels. EA) This is your News Off The Top. 1. EA) In a video posted on YouTube late Wednesday, Syrian deputy oil minister Abdo Hussammedin (AB-doo HOOS-ah-meh-DEEN) has announced that he is defecting from the Assad regime to join anti-government forces. In the video he says that he will join those who reject injustice and the brutal campaign of the regime. VS) The 58-year old is the highest-profile political member to jump ship since conflict there began one year ago. His defection is a lone bright spot for rebel forces, who have recently suffered heavy losses and were driven out of the city of Homs (hOmz). 2. VS) And in neighboring Israel, a newspaper, citing unnamed Western intelligence sources, claims that the Obama administration offered Israel a variety of high-tech weaponry to delay an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. According to the paper Maariv (mah-REEV), the offer was made during Benjamin Netanyahu_s highly publicized visit in Washington earlier this week.EA) Refueling planes and bunker-busting bombs were apparently on offer. Under the deal, Israel would agree to postpone any attack until 2013, well after November_s presidential election. Netanyahu has stressed that a war with Iran is not inevitable, but that he is growing short on patience with diplomatic efforts so far. 3. VS) Gadget enthusiasts have been waiting with bated breath for the latest offering from Apple - and CEO Tim Cook gave them exactly what they wanted on Wednesday. He officially unveiled the new iPad, which for now is simply named The New iPad.EA) The most notable improvement is the picture quality. In stunning HD, the 9.7 inch display screen features a mind boggling 3-point-1 million pixels. It will also have a much faster processor and a 5-megapixel camera. Apple fanboys will be able to get their hands on the new tablet when it launches in 10 countries - including the US - on March 16th. This comes just six weeks after another election was unable to produce a new a government. This means that Greece will remain in the Eurozone while going through strict austerity measures. New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras (ahn-TOH-nees sah-mah-RAHS) called the vote a ìvictory for all Europei and called on all parties to create a strong, steady government. Global markets have reacted favorably to the news.But Greece wasnit the only country holding elections. Citizens were back at the polls in Egypt and France. For more on the results and what they mean here_s Natasha Olenski. NO) Eila, in Egypt the Muslim Brotherhoodis Mohamed Morsi (moh-HAH-mehd MOOR-see) has declared victory in that countries presidential election. But his opponent Ahmed Shafik (AH-mehd shah-FEEK) n who was Prime Minister under Hosni Mubarakis (HOHS-nee moo-BAH-rahk) regime n has refused to concede. Shafik claims there are still many votes to be counted, and he likes his odds in districts where heis considered to be a strong candidate, including parts of Cairo. Meanwhile, the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces issued a decree that essentially makes the title of President meaningless.And in France, voters gave newly elected President Francois Hollandeis (frahn-SWAH oh-LAHND) Socialist Party an absolute majority in Parliament. It appears that the Socialists will have at least 313 of the 577 seats. This is a huge boost for Hollande because the results indicate there is widespread support for his anti austerity proposals Eila. EA) So, whatis next for the Socialist party Nat?NO) Well, theyire planning on hiring 60-thousand new teachers, putting off balancing their budget, and raising income taxes.EA) France is definitely bucking the trend but I have a feeling they won_t be the last country to reject sever belt tightening. You know Rachelle, like the rest of the world I_ve been shocked by the recent rash of killings in (too-LOOZ), France.RW) Fortunately, it looks like the killer_s reign of terror could soon be over.PP) Police have tracked him down and are negotiating with him in a TENSE standoff. Here_s what we know so far. 1. RW) Since the early morning hours on Wednesday, around 300 police officers have been engaged in a tense standoff with the man believed to be responsible for the shooting of seven people. Police have surrounded an apartment in Toulouse and shots have been fired, injuring at least two officers. The suspect has been identified as Mohammed Merah (may-RAH). He_s allegedly a self-styled al-Qaeda jiHADist who spent a great deal of time in Afghanistan and Pakistan. PP) At the time of this report, there have been mixed messages about the exact nature of the situation there. At one point, certain media outlets claimed that the suspect had surrendered. However France_s interior minister later denied those reports. He said an arrest had not yet taken place, and that negotiations were ongoing. We_ll keep you posted. 2. RW) On Tuesday afternoon, a powerful 7-point-4 magnitude earthquake rocked central and southern Mexico. Hardest hit was the town of Iguala (ee-HHHOI-lah), which is close to the quakes epacenter. Around 800 homes were damaged as terrified residents fled into the streets.PP) The silver lining is that, amazingly, there were no fatalities and only 9 injuries. Also uninjured is President Obama_s daughter Malia (MAHL-ee-uh), who_s vacationing in Mexico. But the danger may not be over yet. The region has been rocked by at least 18 aftershocks. Tremors are common in Mexico, with 15 above-7 quakes registered since 1973.3. RW) This coming weekend, President Obama will tour the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea for the very first time. He_s going to be in South Korea as part of a 3-day summit on nuclear security.
