It_s made landfall as a category 1 storm and caused widespread flooding and destruction. Here_s Katherine Curtis with the latest.Eila, almost half a million people in Louisiana are without power since Isaac made landfall early Wednesday morning. So far the hardest hit area is Plaquemines Parish, near New Orleans, where levees are overflowing, prompting concerns of serious flooding. To make matters worse it seems that Isaac has stalled over New Orleans and is expected to dump up to 20 inches or rain in the next 24 hours. Add to that 80 mile per hour winds, with gusts up to 100 miles per hour, and you have a deteriorating situation. As far as politics goes, Republicans have officially nominated Mitt Romney as their candidate for President of the United States. However, polls show that he_s got his work cut out for him. According to a new Washington PostABC News poll, among total voters Romney has a 51-percent unfavorable rating. That_s the lowest of any Democrat or Republican nominee dating back to the Reagan era. We_ve got some potentially scary news for anyone who_s been camping in California recently. Nearly two thousand people have been exposed to a potentially lethal virus. Marina Valmont has been tracking this story and joins us now with the details.Kat, officials at Yosemite National Park are warning over 17-hundred campers that they MAY have been exposed to the Hantavirus. The warning extends to everyone who has stayed at the park_s Curry Village from mid-June onward. The reason for the longer-than-usual window is that it can take up to 6 weeks for symptoms to occur. Those include flu-like symptoms such as dizziness, fever, aches, and chills. 2 fatalities attributed to the virus have been confirmed so far, with 2 more infected campers, expected to survive. Kat, officials are urging anyone who_s stayed at the park to seek medical attention at the very first sign of symptoms. Some good advise, but the question I have Marina is where does this Hantavirus come from?Specifically, deer mice. Any exposure to them or their waste or fluids could infect you.Nasty. An open seas collision has left dozens dead, a hundred or more injured, and local authorities asking: why?Here is the latest.It happened Monday night when one vessel, carrying more than one-hundred and twenty passengers to a fireworks show, slammed into a ferry, throwing dozens of people into the water. The ferry managed to make it back to port, but the other ship half-sank into the water.The incident is being called Hong Kong_s worst maritime disaster in decades. Authorities have arrested six people - three from each vessel who are believed to be responsible for the crash. 37 people are dead, while the number of missing remains unknown. In other news today, the Syrian government is accusing the United States and a handful of other countries of supporting terrorism. According to Syrian foreign minister Waleed Al-Mualem, the US along with France, Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have been shipping money, weapons, and soldiers into Syria in an attempt to overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad.The accusations come on the last day of the annual UN General Assembly in New York. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the ongoing violence in Syria. He called for an end to the fighting there in the strongest terms possible. According to the UN, nearly 300-thousand people have fled Syria to escape the bloodshed. And in Washington, the White House has confirmed that its servers have been targeted by a cyber-attack. An unclassified network was breached, but officials are confident that no sensitive information had been stolen.The White House announcement follows a report from the Washington Free Beacon that the hackers were working under the direction of the Chinese government. American officials would neither confirm nor deny whether the attacks were linked to China. It_s certainly not the first time we_ve heard about this type of thing and I_m sure it won_t be the last, Peyton. No but you can be sure Washington will be beefing up its web security. Thereis no immediate link to Montreal murder suspect Luka Magnotta, but a hand and foot from his victim Jun (JOON) Lin are still unaccounted for, along with his head.LAURA) Meanwhile in Berlin, Magnotta will not fight extradition to Canada. However, Montreal police say they donit see any need to rush the process. A police spokesperson says that theyire not even close to completing their investigation. Theyire also investigating claims of animal cruelty, and rumors that Magnotta once dated notorious killer Karla Homolka.2. RW) In Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker was able to hold on to his job after winning a recall vote.With most votes counted, he was ahead of his challenger n Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett - by a 7 percent margin. That margin of victory is actually greater than the last time he beat Barrett in 2010.LAURA) Walker has been a polarizing figure both in Wisconsin and around the US. Republicans consider him a hero for pushing measures that strip collective bargaining rights from public unions. Walkeris opposition pointed out that his camp outspent the unions by a 7-to-1 margin in this campaign, with 70-percent of that coming from out of state.3. RW) And Republicans in the US Senate have blocked a bill that would have guaranteed that women are paid the same as their male equivalents. 60 votes were needed to pass the bill, but it was defeated 52-47. All Senate Republicans voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act, including the 5 female GOP senators.LAURA) The bill would have forced employers to prove that any wage differences between women and men in the same position wasnit gender-related. Furthermore, employers wouldnit be able to punish employees for sharing pay information with each other. The quake hit just 3 days after Japan marked the one-year anniversary of the fatal 9-point-oh magnitude tremor and sweeping tsunami that led to the Fukushima nuclear crisis - a situation that is still far from over. WSJ) Elsewhere on the international scene, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta (pan-NET-uh) has arrived for a very important visit in Afghanistan. He_s there hoping to ease tempers over the shocking shooting rampage by a US soldier as well as the recent burning of Korans by NATO troops. With more on the very delicate situation there we_ll turn things over to Peyton Priestly. What_s the latest Peyton? PP) Whitney, Panetta is scheduled to meet with local tribal leaders and Afghan officials during his two-day visit. The killing spree by that US soldier has led to violent threats from the Taliban, and outrage from Afghan president Hamid Karzai. (ha-MID kar-ZY), He called the Sunday shooting spree acts of terror and unforgivable. Panetta is the first high-ranking American official to visit Afghanistan since the incident. PP) Meanwhile back in the US, President Barack Obama has been playing host to a very high-profile visitor of his own British Prime Minister David Cameron is stateside for a visit that will see him sit down with the President for discussion on topics ranging from Afghanistan to the upcoming NATO summit. What_s going on ladies Well Eila, as you said, it_s a historic trip, as a matter of fact, Hilary Clinton has become the first US Secretary of State in almost 60 years to visit the country of Laos.Her trip is meant to shore up economic ties, but also to restore diplomatic relations in the wake of the war in Vietnam. Welcome to your News off The Top During that conflict, the US dropped millions of tons of bombs on Laos, many of which remain unexploded to this day. They_ve had a heavy impact on farmers in the country_s rural regions. The US has committed to spending 9 million dollars this year to clean up the un-detonated bombs.Also on the agenda for Clinton: discussions regarding Laos_s pending entry into the World Trade Organization. She_ll also be discussiong the contentious issue of the Mekong (ME-kong) River dam, which could affect millions of people in Laos and neighbouring countries. After her historic visit, Clinton will head to Cambodia.The King of Thailand has pardoned a US man who was jailed for insulting the Thai royal family. Joe Gordon n a used car salesman from Colorado n had allegedly posted online portions of a banned biography of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Although he posted from the US, the Thai-born Gordon was arrested when he visited Thailand last year.Thailand has strict laws against defaming the monarchy that can result in up to 15 years in prison. The King has given no reason for pardoning and releasing Gordon. Washington had been pressing for his release since he was first arrested last May, and urged Thai officials to respect freedom of expression.And the captain of the Italian cruise liner that ran aground and capsized earlier this year, says he_s sorry about what happened. In an interview, Francesco Schettino said that, as captain, he should apologize as a representative of his company and the system. However, he insists that he_s not the only one to blame.While admitting he was distracted, he insists that the Costa Concordia was under the command of another officer when the accident happened. He also denied allegations that he was showing off to a woman on the bridge. Schettino has been released from house arrest, but is forbidden to leave his home town. He_s charged with multiple charges of manslaughter, as well as causing a shipwreck. She_s got some pretty big shoes to fill Up first, however: the headlines Our top story today takes us to the skies over the eastern Atlantic, where Hurricane Leslie continues to grow stronger on its path towards Bermuda. It_s triggered emergency preparations for the island_s residents. Senior anchor Victoria Sinclair has been tracking the storm and joins us now with the latest.Eila, citizens of Bermuda have been told to prepare for the worst. Hurricane Leslie is bearing down on the tiny island and by Friday it_s expected to be a Category 2 storm. That means its winds could be upwards of 110 mile per hour. The storm is expected to continue intensifying and hit Bermuda over the weekend. Leslie could hover over the British territory for up to two days before heading north toward Newfoundland. A US federal judge has turned down an attempted block on part of Arizona_s controversial immigration law. The show me your papers provision is officially known as Section 2B, and demands that police officers check the immigration status of anyone stopped for another violation. Critics say the provision will encourage racial profiling, but US District Judge Susan R. Bolton ruled that it could not be blocked based only on speculation of profiling. Arizona is home to an estimated 360-thousand illegal immigrants. Also in the US, new data from the Department of Agriculture has some alarming news about Americans_ ability to feed themselves. We_ll go now to Peyton Priestley with more on this story.Vic, the federal numbers say that in 2011, over 50 MILLION Americans couldn_t afford to buy food for themselves at some point. Some 17 million Americans also identified themselves as having very low food security, which means they had to reduce the amount and quality of food that they ate. It also means that in at least 7 different months of the year, they didn_t have enough money to feed themselves. That_s an increase of 800-thousand people from the year before. Those numbers come just one day after another report that said nearly fifteen percent of the US population or almost 47 million Americans - received food stamps this past June. That_s an all-time high Vic.But those people receiving food stamps don_t account for everyone, do they?Thatis right. Only 57-percent of households classified as food insecure participate in those programs.Why do you think that is?I_m sure there_s a number of reasons n in many cases I think it might be pride.I think you_re right. So far the hardest hit area is Plaquemines Parish, near New Orleans, where levees are overflowing, prompting concerns of serious flooding. To make matters worse it seems that Isaac has stalled over New Orleans and is expected to dump up to 20 inches or rain in the next 24 hours. Add to that 80 mile per hour winds, with gusts up to 100 miles per hour, and you have a deteriorating situation. As far as politics goes, Republicans have officially nominated Mitt Romney as their candidate for President of the United States. However, polls show that he_s got his work cut out for him. According to a new Washington PostABC News poll, among total voters Romney has a 51-percent unfavorable rating. That_s the lowest of any Democrat or Republican nominee dating back to the Reagan era. We_ve got some potentially scary news for anyone who_s been camping in California recently. Nearly two thousand people have been exposed to a potentially lethal virus. Marina Valmont has been tracking this story and joins us now with the details.Kat, officials at Yosemite National Park are warning over 17-hundred campers that they MAY have been exposed to the Hantavirus. The warning extends to everyone who has stayed at the park_s Curry Village from mid-June onward. The reason for the longer-than-usual window is that it can take up to 6 weeks for symptoms to occur. Those include flu-like symptoms such as dizziness, fever, aches, and chills. 2 fatalities attributed to the virus have been confirmed so far, with 2 more infected campers, expected to survive. Kat, officials are urging anyone who_s stayed at the park to seek medical attention at the very first sign of symptoms. Some good advise, but the question I have Marina is where does this Hantavirus come from?Specifically, deer mice. Any exposure to them or their waste or fluids could infect you.Nasty. An open seas collision has left dozens dead, a hundred or more injured, and local authorities asking: why?Here is the latest.It happened Monday night when one vessel, carrying more than one-hundred and twenty passengers to a fireworks show, slammed into a ferry, throwing dozens of people into the water. The ferry managed to make it back to port, but the other ship half-sank into the water.The incident is being called Hong Kong_s worst maritime disaster in decades. Authorities have arrested six people - three from each vessel who are believed to be responsible for the crash. 37 people are dead, while the number of missing remains unknown. In other news today, the Syrian government is accusing the United States and a handful of other countries of supporting terrorism. According to Syrian foreign minister Waleed Al-Mualem, the US along with France, Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have been shipping money, weapons, and soldiers into Syria in an attempt to overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad.The accusations come on the last day of the annual UN General Assembly in New York. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the ongoing violence in Syria. He called for an end to the fighting there in the strongest terms possible. According to the UN, nearly 300-thousand people have fled Syria to escape the bloodshed. And in Washington, the White House has confirmed that its servers have been targeted by a cyber-attack. An unclassified network was breached, but officials are confident that no sensitive information had been stolen.The White House announcement follows a report from the Washington Free Beacon that the hackers were working under the direction of the Chinese government. American officials would neither confirm nor deny whether the attacks were linked to China. Republicans consider him a hero for pushing measures that strip collective bargaining rights from public unions. Walkeris opposition pointed out that his camp outspent the unions by a 7-to-1 margin in this campaign, with 70-percent of that coming from out of state.3. RW) And Republicans in the US Senate have blocked a bill that would have guaranteed that women are paid the same as their male equivalents. 60 votes were needed to pass the bill, but it was defeated 52-47. Welcome to your News off The Top During that conflict, the US dropped millions of tons of bombs on Laos, many of which remain unexploded to this day. They_ve had a heavy impact on farmers in the country_s rural regions. The US has committed to spending 9 million dollars this year to clean up the un-detonated bombs.Also on the agenda for Clinton: discussions regarding Laos_s pending entry into the World Trade Organization. After her historic visit, Clinton will head to Cambodia.The King of Thailand has pardoned a US man who was jailed for insulting the Thai royal family. Joe Gordon n a used car salesman from Colorado n had allegedly posted online portions of a banned biography of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Although he posted from the US, the Thai-born Gordon was arrested when he visited Thailand last year.Thailand has strict laws against defaming the monarchy that can result in up to 15 years in prison. The King has given no reason for pardoning and releasing Gordon. Washington had been pressing for his release since he was first arrested last May, and urged Thai officials to respect freedom of expression.And the captain of the Italian cruise liner that ran aground and capsized earlier this year, says he_s sorry about what happened. In an interview, Francesco Schettino said that, as captain, he should apologize as a representative of his company and the system. However, he insists that he_s not the only one to blame.While admitting he was distracted, he insists that the Costa Concordia was under the command of another officer when the accident happened. He also denied allegations that he was showing off to a woman on the bridge. Schettino has been released from house arrest, but is forbidden to leave his home town. She_s got some pretty big shoes to fill Up first, however: the headlines Our top story today takes us to the skies over the eastern Atlantic, where Hurricane Leslie continues to grow stronger on its path towards Bermuda. It_s triggered emergency preparations for the island_s residents. Senior anchor Victoria Sinclair has been tracking the storm and joins us now with the latest.Eila, citizens of Bermuda have been told to prepare for the worst. Hurricane Leslie is bearing down on the tiny island and by Friday it_s expected to be a Category 2 storm. That means its winds could be upwards of 110 mile per hour. The storm is expected to continue intensifying and hit Bermuda over the weekend. Leslie could hover over the British territory for up to two days before heading north toward Newfoundland. A US federal judge has turned down an attempted block on part of Arizona_s controversial immigration law. The show me your papers provision is officially known as Section 2B, and demands that police officers check the immigration status of anyone stopped for another violation. Critics say the provision will encourage racial profiling, but US District Judge Susan R. Bolton ruled that it could not be blocked based only on speculation of profiling. Arizona is home to an estimated 360-thousand illegal immigrants. Also in the US, new data from the Department of Agriculture has some alarming news about Americans_ ability to feed themselves. We_ll go now to Peyton Priestley with more on this story.Vic, the federal numbers say that in 2011, over 50 MILLION Americans couldn_t afford to buy food for themselves at some point. Some 17 million Americans also identified themselves as having very low food security, which means they had to reduce the amount and quality of food that they ate. It also means that in at least 7 different months of the year, they didn_t have enough money to feed themselves. That_s an increase of 800-thousand people from the year before. Those numbers come just one day after another report that said nearly fifteen percent of the US population or almost 47 million Americans - received food stamps this past June. That_s an all-time high Vic.But those people receiving food stamps don_t account for everyone, do they?Thatis right. Only 57-percent of households classified as food insecure participate in those programs.Why do you think that is?I_m sure there_s a number of reasons n in many cases I think it might be pride.I think you_re right.
