It seems their STILL not getting the message from the rest of the world on their controversial nuclear program.And because of it, the US just imposed new sanctions. Here_s the latest.US President Barack Obama is imposing even stricter sanctions against Iran. They_re aimed at Iran_s energy sector, as well as several financial institutions. The country is being accused of getting around existing sanctions by getting paid for oil with precious metals, or through bartering. These new sanctions would discourage that practice.Obama says he_s still committed to coming to a diplomatic solution when it comes to dealing with Iran, but the ball is in their court to respect global demands. At the center of the issue is Iran_s nuclear program, which they insist is simply for energy purposes and not for creating weapons n a position most other countries aren_t buying.In Oslo Norway, there was a bomb scare that resulted in a huge chunk of the city being evacuated. A US Embassy vehicle was spotted with a suspicious-looking device attached to it. Police quickly cordoned off a 500 yard area around the embassy, evacuated buildings, and shut down most transportation including bus and rail lines.It was later determined that the so-called bomb was a training device which had been inadvertently left on the vehicle. Police are still reeling from criticism that they didn_t act quickly enough after Anders Behring Breivik_s deadly bombing and killing spree last year.Mexico_s war on drug cartels is continuing, with several key MILITARY officials being hit with criminal charges 3 Generals and a Lieutenant Colonel were arrested in May, and have now been slapped with formal charges. All 4 are accused of organized crime to further drug-trafficking.It_s suspected that the officers played major roles in either aiding or protecting the notorious Beltran Leyva cartel. Most shocking is the high-ranking positions they held in the military n one of the accused once served as Mexico_s assistant defense secretary. EA) With ten states up for grabs on Super Tuesday, Mitt Romney got JUST enough support to maintain his status as the Republican frontrunner. Romney took his home state of Massachusetts, Virginia, Alaska, Vermont, Idaho, and most importantly, edged Rick Santorum in the key swing state of Ohio. Romney can take comfort in the fact that no GOP candidate has ever won the nomination without winning Ohio. However his narrow win there over Santorum points to a concerning lack of support from the conservative base.For his part, Santorum took the states of Tennessee, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. He_s still Romney_s top challenger, but he_s not alone Newt Gingrich pulled out a desperate win in his home state of Georgia to keep his run alive. Victoria Sinclair will have a complete run down of Tuesday night_s results later in our election segment, Power Play. In other news, authorities have scored a MAJOR victory in the fight against online hacker groups, arresting some of the highest-ranking members of the infamous _Anonymous_ and _LulzSec_ collectives. And it turns out they had a little help from a source on the INSIDE. Rachel Simmons has been tracking this story and joins us now with the details. Rachel?RS) Eila five members of the notorious hacking groups were arrested in the US, UK, and Ireland on Tuesday. The big break actually came thanks to help from one of the world_s top-ranking hackers. 28-year old Hector Xavier Monsegur (HEK-tor ZAY-vyur MON-she-goor) was secretly arrested last summer in New York City and has been working with the FBI ever since. He_s referred to in court papers as the ringleader of LulzSec, and was a rockstar in the hacktivist community, working under the alias _Sabu_. The five men arrested - four LulzSec members and one from Anonymous - are facing charges in New York. They_re suspected of causing billions in damages to major banks and corporations. The FBI calls the arrests a devastating blow to the groups.SOmeone else on the wrong side of the law was once one of the wealthiest men in the US. But oh how far he_s fallen. On Tuesday Texas tycoon Allen Stanford was convicted on 7 billion dollars worth of fraud charges. Stanford was found guilty on 13 of the 14 charges he faced, which also included conspiracy, and wire and mail fraud. Using what prosecutors called an old-fashioned Ponzi scheme, Stanford spent billions of investors_ hard-earned dollars over the last 20 years to bankroll his lavish jet-setting lifestyle, as well as a number of failed business ventures. A civil suit is underway to try and recover hundreds of millions from Stanford_s global bank accounts EIla.EA) And so if Stanford_s been convicted, when can we expect sentencing?RS) The judge is expected to schedule that once the civil suit_s taken care of. We should know more in the next few days. EA) How much prison time are we potentially talking about here?RS) That really depends on the judge. For the most serious charges he_s looking at up to 20 years, but if the judge makes him serve his sentences consecutively, he may never see the light of day again. His ambassador to Iraq, Nawaf al-Fares, has defected to the opposition, making him the highest-ranking Syrian official to jump ship. In a video statement posted on Facebook, al-Fares says that he_s joined the cause of the revolution. He_s also urging fellow officials to join him, including those in the military. Meanwhile, in the US, the FBI has issued a massive reward for information leading to the arrest of four suspects in the fatal 2010 shooting of an American border patrol agent. It_s all part of the controversial Fast And Furios investigation. Eila Adams has been tracking this story and joins us now with the latest. Vic, federal officials have named four more defendants believed to be responsible for the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. A million dollar reward is being offered up to anyone with info that could lead to their capture. A fifth suspect is already in custody. According to the feds, the fugitives were part of a rip-off crew of Mexican bandits preying on illegal drug couriers near the US-Mexico border. The investigation has brought to light the controversial US-led Fast and Furious gun-tracking operation, which allowed the illegal crossing of firearms at the border in hopes of tracing them to Mexican drug cartels. And Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was brave enough to give a speech to the N-double-A-C-P on Wednesday. Not exactly a demographic that votes Republicans, EVER. So to say it didn_t go to well is a bit of an understatement. He WAS doing okay, getting applause for pledging cuts to government spending. Then this happened:The boos continued later, when Romney insisted he would be a better president than Barack Obama for African-Americans. Romney told the crowd that the economy is far worse for black people than most other Americans, and vowed to change that. Still Vic, you_ve got to applaud him for showing up. WHich is more then we can say for Obama. He sent a video message along with Joe Biden instead.Yeah that caught me off guard. He may have the black vote in the bag but he_s still got to energize them to come out and vote, I mean it_s not like he_s running away with this election. The producers of Thailand_s Got Talent have been summoned by the country_s Culture Minister to answer WHY a 23-year old female contestant was allowed to paint a picture on stage with her breasts. Nudity on TV is a big no-no in Thailand_s largely Buddhist and conservative society. The government could take stern action. Even the show_s judges were shocked by the display. One of them said it was totally inappropriate, which is ironic considering she_s posed nude in the past herself (insert image). They really need to lighten up In other NAKED news, we all know nudity_s not much of a problem in Europe, especially in Denmark. That_s where nearly 250 shoppers recently stripped down to their birthday suits in hopes of grabbing some free groceries. It was part of the grand opening promotion of a store. The first hundred naked shoppers to show up got 275 dollars in free food. They were only expecting a few people but were thrilled with the turnout. And a man who_s ALWAYS working with naked folk - Mr. Spencer Tunick is in the news once again. The famed photographer recently gathered 17-hundred nude models in Munich for a special shoot at Max-Joseph Platz, outside the city_s opera house. Tunick was there to shoot his interpretation of a famous Richard Wagner opera. The project was commissioned to help promote the launch of the Bavarian State Opera_s 2012 summer season. Welcome to Naked News, I_m VS. In our top story today, Jordan_s government says they_ve thwarted a major terror plot. According to officials, the plan was being referred to by the alleged terrorists as a follow-up to 9-11. Katherine Curtis has been following this developing story and joins us now with the latest. What_s going on Kat?Vic, the suspects were apparently calling it 9-11 TWO, and it was supposedly set to occur on the 7th anniversary of al Qaeda_s last attack inside Jordan. Officials say that 11 suspects were taking part, all Jordanian citizens who were moving in and out of Syria. Jordan_s intelligence suggests that targets included the US Embassy, shopping centers, and other areas populated by foreign nationals. They suggest that the shopping center attacks were designed to attract attention away from other, more prominent target buildings. Vic, the group reportedly planned on using a variety of weapons, including car bombs and submachine guns. Kat has it been confirmed that these would-be attackers are part of al-Qaeda?Too soon to say right now Vic. Intelligence officials aren_t technically labeling them as al-Qaeda. However, they DO say the suspects are, quote, associated with the ideology of al Qaeda.A very carefully worded statement. Thanks Kat. I trust you_ll keep us up to speed on any developments there.Elsewhere in the Middle East, thousands of mourners gathered in Beirut (bay-ROOT) to pay their respects to slain intelligence official Wassam al-Hassan. He was responsible for uncovering an alleged Syrian bomb conspiracy 2 months ago. It_s believed that he was the primary target in a car bombing that killed him and 7 others and injured scores more. Lebanese politicians are accusing the brutal Syrian leadership of being behind the assassination. The opposition party is also calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who has ties to Syrian allies. Reports have surfaced suggesting that the US could be setting up one-on-one talks with Iran over their nuclear program. However, the White House is strenuously denying these rumors. Natasha Olenski joins us now with the latest. What are you hearing Nat? It depends on who you believe, Vic. The New York Times is reporting that Washington has approached Iran about having bi-lateral talks regarding their nuclear ambitions. The report quotes anonymous officials as saying that Iran was receptive to the idea, but only after America_s presidential election in November. However, American officials say that_s not the case. The White House says that they would be more than happy to meet, but that nothing was on the table as of yet. The US and many other countries contend that Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons - charges that Tehran has repeatedly denied, back to you Vic.Thanks very much Nat. PP) And as Victoria Sinclair is about to explain, authorities on both sides of the border are willing to make a rare exception. VS) Thanks ladies, and whatever he does, he better not look down An American daredevil has just been granted Canadian government clearance to attempt a tightrope walk across Niagara Falls The approximately 40 minute long walk will be done on a custom made 2 inch thick rope, 220 feet above the gorge. And if he succeeds he_ll be the first in history to do so. 33-year old Nik Wallenda will attempt the 18-hundred foot stunt some time this summer. He says it_s been a dream of his since he was 6 years old. Nik is a seventh-generation member of the famous Flying Wallenda family. Officials say they_re making the exception based on his expertise, and it_ll be at least another twenty years before anyone gets the chance to try the stunt again. It also helps that the spectacular act should bring in millions in revenue for the region. Plus Nik has a deal with the Discovery Channel to broadcast the event live. Those with more discerning palettes better listen up A Dutch antique collector is selling off his amazing collection of 5-thousand cognac bottles. Topping the list is a bottle from 1795 taken for officers in Napoleon_s army. The bottle alone is estimated to be worth 197 thousand dollars But if you want one, you_ve got to buy them all The entire collection is valued at 7-point-9 million, and was started way back in 1880 by his great grandfather. And so much for finders_ keepers A US federal judge has just ruled that an American deep-sea salvage company must return over 500 million dollars worth of ancient coins to the Spanish government. Odyssey Marine Exploration spent more than 2 million dollars in operating costs to recover the coins, which were lost in an 1804 shipwreck off the coast of Portugal. The US team made the discovery in 2007 and the battle for ownership has been in legal limbo ever since. That_s what I call a case of BAD luck. It seems their STILL not getting the message from the rest of the world on their controversial nuclear program.And because of it, the US just imposed new sanctions. Here_s the latest.US President Barack Obama is imposing even stricter sanctions against Iran. They_re aimed at Iran_s energy sector, as well as several financial institutions. The country is being accused of getting around existing sanctions by getting paid for oil with precious metals, or through bartering. These new sanctions would discourage that practice.Obama says he_s still committed to coming to a diplomatic solution when it comes to dealing with Iran, but the ball is in their court to respect global demands. At the center of the issue is Iran_s nuclear program, which they insist is simply for energy purposes and not for creating weapons n a position most other countries aren_t buying.In Oslo Norway, there was a bomb scare that resulted in a huge chunk of the city being evacuated. A US Embassy vehicle was spotted with a suspicious-looking device attached to it. Police quickly cordoned off a 500 yard area around the embassy, evacuated buildings, and shut down most transportation including bus and rail lines.It was later determined that the so-called bomb was a training device which had been inadvertently left on the vehicle. Police are still reeling from criticism that they didn_t act quickly enough after Anders Behring Breivik_s deadly bombing and killing spree last year.Mexico_s war on drug cartels is continuing, with several key MILITARY officials being hit with criminal charges 3 Generals and a Lieutenant Colonel were arrested in May, and have now been slapped with formal charges. All 4 are accused of organized crime to further drug-trafficking.It_s suspected that the officers played major roles in either aiding or protecting the notorious Beltran Leyva cartel. Most shocking is the high-ranking positions they held in the military n one of the accused once served as Mexico_s assistant defense secretary. EA) With ten states up for grabs on Super Tuesday, Mitt Romney got JUST enough support to maintain his status as the Republican frontrunner. Romney took his home state of Massachusetts, Virginia, Alaska, Vermont, Idaho, and most importantly, edged Rick Santorum in the key swing state of Ohio. Romney can take comfort in the fact that no GOP candidate has ever won the nomination without winning Ohio. However his narrow win there over Santorum points to a concerning lack of support from the conservative base.For his part, Santorum took the states of Tennessee, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. He_s still Romney_s top challenger, but he_s not alone Newt Gingrich pulled out a desperate win in his home state of Georgia to keep his run alive. Victoria Sinclair will have a complete run down of Tuesday night_s results later in our election segment, Power Play. In other news, authorities have scored a MAJOR victory in the fight against online hacker groups, arresting some of the highest-ranking members of the infamous _Anonymous_ and _LulzSec_ collectives. And it turns out they had a little help from a source on the INSIDE. Rachel Simmons has been tracking this story and joins us now with the details. Rachel?RS) Eila five members of the notorious hacking groups were arrested in the US, UK, and Ireland on Tuesday. The big break actually came thanks to help from one of the world_s top-ranking hackers. 28-year old Hector Xavier Monsegur (HEK-tor ZAY-vyur MON-she-goor) was secretly arrested last summer in New York City and has been working with the FBI ever since. He_s referred to in court papers as the ringleader of LulzSec, and was a rockstar in the hacktivist community, working under the alias _Sabu_. The five men arrested - four LulzSec members and one from Anonymous - are facing charges in New York. They_re suspected of causing billions in damages to major banks and corporations. The FBI calls the arrests a devastating blow to the groups.SOmeone else on the wrong side of the law was once one of the wealthiest men in the US. But oh how far he_s fallen. On Tuesday Texas tycoon Allen Stanford was convicted on 7 billion dollars worth of fraud charges. Stanford was found guilty on 13 of the 14 charges he faced, which also included conspiracy, and wire and mail fraud. Using what prosecutors called an old-fashioned Ponzi scheme, Stanford spent billions of investors_ hard-earned dollars over the last 20 years to bankroll his lavish jet-setting lifestyle, as well as a number of failed business ventures. A civil suit is underway to try and recover hundreds of millions from Stanford_s global bank accounts EIla.EA) And so if Stanford_s been convicted, when can we expect sentencing?RS) The judge is expected to schedule that once the civil suit_s taken care of. We should know more in the next few days. EA) How much prison time are we potentially talking about here?RS) That really depends on the judge. For the most serious charges he_s looking at up to 20 years, but if the judge makes him serve his sentences consecutively, he may never see the light of day again. In a video statement posted on Facebook, al-Fares says that he_s joined the cause of the revolution. He_s also urging fellow officials to join him, including those in the military. Meanwhile, in the US, the FBI has issued a massive reward for information leading to the arrest of four suspects in the fatal 2010 shooting of an American border patrol agent. It_s all part of the controversial Fast And Furios investigation. Eila Adams has been tracking this story and joins us now with the latest. Vic, federal officials have named four more defendants believed to be responsible for the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. A million dollar reward is being offered up to anyone with info that could lead to their capture. A fifth suspect is already in custody. According to the feds, the fugitives were part of a rip-off crew of Mexican bandits preying on illegal drug couriers near the US-Mexico border. The investigation has brought to light the controversial US-led Fast and Furious gun-tracking operation, which allowed the illegal crossing of firearms at the border in hopes of tracing them to Mexican drug cartels. And Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was brave enough to give a speech to the N-double-A-C-P on Wednesday. Not exactly a demographic that votes Republicans, EVER. So to say it didn_t go to well is a bit of an understatement. He WAS doing okay, getting applause for pledging cuts to government spending. Then this happened:The boos continued later, when Romney insisted he would be a better president than Barack Obama for African-Americans. Romney told the crowd that the economy is far worse for black people than most other Americans, and vowed to change that. Still Vic, you_ve got to applaud him for showing up. WHich is more then we can say for Obama. He sent a video message along with Joe Biden instead.Yeah that caught me off guard. He may have the black vote in the bag but he_s still got to energize them to come out and vote, I mean it_s not like he_s running away with this election. In our top story today, Jordan_s government says they_ve thwarted a major terror plot. According to officials, the plan was being referred to by the alleged terrorists as a follow-up to 9-11. Katherine Curtis has been following this developing story and joins us now with the latest. What_s going on Kat?Vic, the suspects were apparently calling it 9-11 TWO, and it was supposedly set to occur on the 7th anniversary of al Qaeda_s last attack inside Jordan. Officials say that 11 suspects were taking part, all Jordanian citizens who were moving in and out of Syria. Jordan_s intelligence suggests that targets included the US Embassy, shopping centers, and other areas populated by foreign nationals. They suggest that the shopping center attacks were designed to attract attention away from other, more prominent target buildings. Vic, the group reportedly planned on using a variety of weapons, including car bombs and submachine guns. Kat has it been confirmed that these would-be attackers are part of al-Qaeda?Too soon to say right now Vic. Intelligence officials aren_t technically labeling them as al-Qaeda. However, they DO say the suspects are, quote, associated with the ideology of al Qaeda.A very carefully worded statement. Thanks Kat. I trust you_ll keep us up to speed on any developments there.Elsewhere in the Middle East, thousands of mourners gathered in Beirut (bay-ROOT) to pay their respects to slain intelligence official Wassam al-Hassan. He was responsible for uncovering an alleged Syrian bomb conspiracy 2 months ago. It_s believed that he was the primary target in a car bombing that killed him and 7 others and injured scores more. Lebanese politicians are accusing the brutal Syrian leadership of being behind the assassination. The opposition party is also calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who has ties to Syrian allies. Reports have surfaced suggesting that the US could be setting up one-on-one talks with Iran over their nuclear program. However, the White House is strenuously denying these rumors. Natasha Olenski joins us now with the latest. What are you hearing Nat? It depends on who you believe, Vic. The New York Times is reporting that Washington has approached Iran about having bi-lateral talks regarding their nuclear ambitions. The report quotes anonymous officials as saying that Iran was receptive to the idea, but only after America_s presidential election in November. However, American officials say that_s not the case. The White House says that they would be more than happy to meet, but that nothing was on the table as of yet. VS) Thanks ladies, and whatever he does, he better not look down An American daredevil has just been granted Canadian government clearance to attempt a tightrope walk across Niagara Falls The approximately 40 minute long walk will be done on a custom made 2 inch thick rope, 220 feet above the gorge. And if he succeeds he_ll be the first in history to do so. 33-year old Nik Wallenda will attempt the 18-hundred foot stunt some time this summer. He says it_s been a dream of his since he was 6 years old. Nik is a seventh-generation member of the famous Flying Wallenda family. Officials say they_re making the exception based on his expertise, and it_ll be at least another twenty years before anyone gets the chance to try the stunt again. It also helps that the spectacular act should bring in millions in revenue for the region. Plus Nik has a deal with the Discovery Channel to broadcast the event live. Those with more discerning palettes better listen up A Dutch antique collector is selling off his amazing collection of 5-thousand cognac bottles. Topping the list is a bottle from 1795 taken for officers in Napoleon_s army. The bottle alone is estimated to be worth 197 thousand dollars But if you want one, you_ve got to buy them all The entire collection is valued at 7-point-9 million, and was started way back in 1880 by his great grandfather. And so much for finders_ keepers A US federal judge has just ruled that an American deep-sea salvage company must return over 500 million dollars worth of ancient coins to the Spanish government. Odyssey Marine Exploration spent more than 2 million dollars in operating costs to recover the coins, which were lost in an 1804 shipwreck off the coast of Portugal. The US team made the discovery in 2007 and the battle for ownership has been in legal limbo ever since. That_s what I call a case of BAD luck.
