Hi Marina, one man is dead and another injured in a shooting as newly-elected Quebec Premier Pauline Marois was giving her victory speech. The suspect then allegedly tried to set a fire before he was apprehended. As he was being taken into custody, he reportedly yelled out The English Are Awakening.Marois was unharmed, and returned later to deliver her speech. Police are so far unable to determine if she was, in fact, a target. Marois is the province_s first female premier, and the leader of the separatist Parti Quebecois. During her victory speech, she pledged ìWe want a country. And we will have it.iIn other news, Mexican marines have captured the reputed head of one of the most notorious drug cartels in the country. Mario Cardenas Guillen, AKA El Gordo, has reportedly run the Gulf Cartel since his brother, former leader Antonio Cardenas - was killed in a 2010 gunfight with government forces.Cardenas looked subdued as officials read a statement detailing his apprehension. One official claimed that when he was caught, he had weapons, ammunition, a large sum of cash, and what appeared to be cocaine. In Asia, Japanese media are reporting that the country has reached a deal to buy a disputed chain of islands in the East China Sea. The deal, worth 26-million dollars, would see Japan purchase the 5 islands and 3 reefs from their private owner, who currently rents them to Japan. But not everybody in the region is happy about this development. China and Taiwan also claim they have ownership of these islands. The whole situation caused a serious diplomatic standoff in 2010, when a Chinese fishing vessel collided with Japanese Coast Guard patrol boats. The fishermen were taken into Japanese custody for several days before being released. China says theyire monitoring the situation closely, and vowed to protect their sovereignty.I_d like to see a list of things that Japan and China DONiT have tensions over.They DO seem to have a lot of on-going issues between them don_t they. Speaking before a crowd of university students in Seoul, the president pledged to rid the world of nuclear weapons. Obama_s comments came just ahead of a key two-day nuclear summit in Seoul, which started Monday. Delegates from about fifty countries have gathered for the talks. During his address, Obama reached out to China and Russia, asking them to join the US in reducing nuclear arsenals and bringing the world closer to his ultimate goal. The president also challenged North Korea to have the courage to pursue peace, and urged Pyongyang against its upcoming long-range missile launch. Unfortunately, it appears the American President_s plea fell on deaf ears. Shortly after his speech on nuclear weapons, North Korea delivered a poignant response of its own, proving that actions really do speak louder than words. For more on the latest in the region we_ll hand things over to Peyton Priestly. Peyton?PP) Natasha, just hours after Obama_s challenge to North Korea, Pyongyang responded by rolling a long-range test-fire rocket onto a launch pad. The rogue state insists that the launch, scheduled for mid-April, is friendly. They claim they_re trying to put a new satellite into orbit. However neighboring nations, including South Korea, see it as an attempt to develop nuclear capabilities. The incident has cast a dark cloud over the ongoing nuclear summit in Seoul, where world powers are discussing methods of dealing with nuclear terrorism. Needless to say Nat, the situation is very tense. NO) Sounds like Kim Jong-Un (KIHM JAWNG-OON) has taken a page right out of his father_s playbook. PP) It does doesn_t it. South Korea_s understandably worried that if the rocket fails, it will fall somewhere over their territory. And if THAT happens, who knows how they_ll respond.NO) Well in any case I_m sure you_ll keep us up-to-date on any major developments there Peyton. Thanks for the report.NO) He_s spent years at the top in Hollywood, but now Oscar-winning director James Cameron has set his sights on sinking to the darkest depths of the world_s oceans On Monday morning, Cameron touched bottom in Challenger Deep. It_s a chasm (KAZM) located in the western Pacific_s Mariana Trench. Cameron descended to more than 35-thousand feet. To put that into perspective, that_s deeper than Mount Everest is high To get there, Cameron and a team of engineers spent eight years building a high-tech vessel. The director is the third person to reach Challenger Deep, but is the first one to do it alone. EA) Hello and welcome to Naked News, I_m Eila Adams. The results of one of the most eagerly anticipated US Supreme Court rulings in decades is IN. The fate of Obamacare lay in the hands of the nine high court judges, and their ruling will impact the lives of millions of Americans for years to come. For the full report on the court_s landmark decision, we_ll turn things over to senior anchor Victoria Sinclair. VS) Thank you Eila. In what will go down as one of the biggest legal rulings in US history, the Supreme Court has upheld every single component of President Obamais health care law. In a narrow 5-4 ruling, the justices deemed Obamacare is in fact constitutional, despite the protest of many critics that accused the legislation of overreaching its authority. The deciding vote went to John Roberts, the Bush-appointed Chief Justice who traditionally rules along conservative lines. The Supreme Court decision has far-reaching implications, given that the law extends health coverage to over 30 million uninsured Americans. It also requires nearly all residents to purchase insurance or face stiff penalties. When originally passed two years ago, Obamacare marked the first major upheaval in the US health system in 60 years. Although a major victory for the President, the issue hasn_t entirely been put to bed. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus REINSE PREE-bus has already gone on the attack, saying a Romney victory in November will give the GOP sufficient authority to defeat the law. On the international front, Turkey has responded to Syriais recent aggression by deploying troops along their shared border in Turkeyis Hatay (hah-TY) province. Officials says the deployment is a response to Syria shooting down of a Turkish fighter jet last week. They_ve also deployed heavy weaponry including rocket launchers and anti aircraft missiles. Meanwhile, Syriais Information Minister has reportedly claimed that the shooting down of the jet was actually just a case of mistaken identity n he says they may have thought it was an Israeli aircraft Eila.EA) Thatis just mind-boggling if you ask me. How could they possibly make that call from the ground?VS) The minister claims that jets from Turkey and Israel ìlook alikei. How they look different than any OTHER jet is beyond me.EA) And how is that explanation any BETTER?VS) Obviously itis not. Welcome to Naked News, I_m Rachelle Wilde. The US military has sent troops to Jordan to keep an eye on Syria and it_s massive stockpile of chemical weapons. US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta made the announcement following a NATO meeting in Belgium. Panetta says about 150 special ops soldiers are working alongside Jordanian forces. Their goal is to watch the movement of chemical weapons in Syria and to help determine how to respond in the event violence spills into Jordan or any other neighboring countries. American President Barack Obama has warned Syria that any attempts to ship the weapons will prompt an immediate US response. Elsewhere in the region, tensions between Turkey and Syria seem to be escalating. On Wednesday the Turkish air force intercepted a Syrian passenger jet flying over Turkish airspace. Officials suspect the Syrian aircraft was being used to smuggle military equipment over from Russia. Eila Adams joins us now with more on this story. Rachelle twenty-five people were aboard the Damascus-bound Airbus A-3-20 when it was intercepted and led back to the Turkish capital of Ankara. This came after Turkey received intel of a possible weapons transfer aboard the aircraft. The country_s foreign minister would not give any specifics as to the type of illicit cargo. He said it is unacceptable that these types of transfers are being made over its airspace. Turkey has upped the rhetoric Rachelle by threatening a violent response should shelling continue near its shared border with Syria. Back to you. Thanks for the story Eila. On the technology front, the makers of one of the world_s most popular web browsers have egg on their face after a MASSIVE security flaw was discovered in their latest update. Our resident tech-spert Katherine Curtis has been following the developments. What_s the latest Kat? If you use Mozilla Firefox to watch the program, you_ll want to hear this. A huge security hole has been discovered in the latest update. Mozilla released a statement saying that the vulnerability could allow a malicious site to access a user_s entire search history. This affects the latest update - Firefox 16, which has since been taken offline. Mozilla says if you haven_t upgraded yet, you should be fine. If you HAVE, or if it was automatically updated, they advise that you downgrade to the previous version.You can do so by going to the link on your screen right now. The non-profit company says that only a small number of their 450-million users have been affected so far. Back to you Rachelle.Thanks for that Kat. It happened recently on the canadian side when he climbed over a safety barrier and jumped. The 180-foot fall should have meant certain death. Instead, rescue workers were stunned to find that he_d survived and waded to shore. He was airlifted to hospital with non life threatening injuries. If you live in New Zealand and smoke, watch out The government there is adamant about getting you to butt out. A secret document has revealed the Ministry of Health wants to completely eradicate smoking by 2025. And they plan on doing it by hitting your pocketbook. How does a hundred dollars a pack sound? Now, onto today_s top stories.A major firefight is being reported in the Syrian capital of Damascus. The fighting - between Syrian rebels and security forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad (bah-SHAHR ahl ah-SAHD) - is said to be the fiercest that the capital has seen in the year-long uprising. The heavy fighting erupted in the upscale and heavily guarded al-Mezze (al MAT-say) area. Brazilian authorities say they_re going to press charges against 17 executives from oil giant Chevron as well as drilling contractor Transocean. This comes after a new oil leak was discovered off the Brazilian coast. The executives have been banned from leaving the country while the investigation is ongoing. This new leak is located near the site of a major oil spill last November. Chevron is already facing a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit over last year_s spill. In this latest case, prosecutors say they_ll be filing charges including environmental crimes.Now let_s shift our attention to the US and the latest in the GOP election race. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is coasting into this week_s Illinois primary after CRUSHING his competition in Puerto Rico. Eila Adams has been watching the results, and has all the latest. Eila?EA) Rachelle, unofficial early results say that Romney easily won the territory_s 20 delegates, with around 83-percent of the votes Romney said his win is based on his best-representing the views and feelings of Puerto Ricans. Rick Santorum was a VERY distant second with a mere 8-percent of votes. In Illinois, Romney is expected to eke out a win with a small margin of victory over Santorum. After Illinois, they_ll head to Louisiana, where pollsters predict Santorum will win over Romney.EA) In other news, Apple has been sitting on nearly 100 billion dollars in cash and it just announced what it plans on doing with SOME of that money. It_s been confirmed that come July, shareholders will begin receiving a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share. It_s the first time Apple has offered a dividend since way back in 1995. And Rachelle, the company has also earmarked 10 billion dollars to buy back some of its own shares over the next three years, back to you.RW) That_s a whole lot of money to be tossing around Eila.EA) It is. Although Apple says it_s confident that even with this massive spending, it_ll still have enough of a `war chest_ to invest in strategic business opportunities.RW) As long as they keep churning out the iPhones and I-Pads every year, I doubt you_ll hear anyone complaining. Supporters of the Democratic Revolution Party_s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took to the streets, echoing his belief that the election had been, quote, plagued by irregularities. Their protests have included blockades and sit-ins throughout the country. This is in spite of the fact several exit polls found PeÒa Nieto to have clinched the presidency. Official results aren_t expected until Wednesday. The U.S. has deployed wide-scale military reinforcements to the Persian Gulf. The move is a preemptive decision geared at deterring Iranian forces from shutting down the Strait of Hormuz HORE-mooz, which has become a hub of activity in recent months. With more on this story, let_s check in with guest anchor Laura. Eila, in addition to monitoring the Strait_s shipping routes, the US is increasing its number of fighter jets in the region, should the standoff over Iran_s nuclear program escalate. The US Navy is also beefing up its presence in Gulf waters, doubling the number of minesweepers in the area. This comes as the U.S. and its allies have begun strictly enforcing their embargo on Iranian oil exports. Speaking under condition of anonymity a US military official didn_t mince words, saying the message to Iran was Don_t even think about sending your boats out to harass our vessels or commercial shipping. We_ll put them on the bottom of the Gulf. That_s a pretty bold statement Eila. It is, but it seems like the US isn_t messing around this time. I guess we_ll see how Iran responds.Well, the ball is definitely in their court but if history is any indication, they won_t take that type of threat lightly. Let_s shift our gaze over to the eastern United States now, where record temperatures and violent storms have left millions of residents without power. Maryland, Washington DC, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia all declared states of emergency, after hurricane-force winds lead to blackouts and extensive property damage. To make matters worse, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has confirmed over two thousand record temperatures were either matched or broken since June 25th. Power companies have warned it may take several days before electricity is completely restored. And unfortunately, there doesn_t seem to be any end to the searing heat in the near future. Mario Cardenas Guillen, AKA El Gordo, has reportedly run the Gulf Cartel since his brother, former leader Antonio Cardenas - was killed in a 2010 gunfight with government forces.Cardenas looked subdued as officials read a statement detailing his apprehension. One official claimed that when he was caught, he had weapons, ammunition, a large sum of cash, and what appeared to be cocaine. In Asia, Japanese media are reporting that the country has reached a deal to buy a disputed chain of islands in the East China Sea. The deal, worth 26-million dollars, would see Japan purchase the 5 islands and 3 reefs from their private owner, who currently rents them to Japan. But not everybody in the region is happy about this development. China and Taiwan also claim they have ownership of these islands. The whole situation caused a serious diplomatic standoff in 2010, when a Chinese fishing vessel collided with Japanese Coast Guard patrol boats. The fishermen were taken into Japanese custody for several days before being released. In what will go down as one of the biggest legal rulings in US history, the Supreme Court has upheld every single component of President Obamais health care law. In a narrow 5-4 ruling, the justices deemed Obamacare is in fact constitutional, despite the protest of many critics that accused the legislation of overreaching its authority. The deciding vote went to John Roberts, the Bush-appointed Chief Justice who traditionally rules along conservative lines. The Supreme Court decision has far-reaching implications, given that the law extends health coverage to over 30 million uninsured Americans. It also requires nearly all residents to purchase insurance or face stiff penalties. When originally passed two years ago, Obamacare marked the first major upheaval in the US health system in 60 years. Although a major victory for the President, the issue hasn_t entirely been put to bed. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus REINSE PREE-bus has already gone on the attack, saying a Romney victory in November will give the GOP sufficient authority to defeat the law. On the international front, Turkey has responded to Syriais recent aggression by deploying troops along their shared border in Turkeyis Hatay (hah-TY) province. Officials says the deployment is a response to Syria shooting down of a Turkish fighter jet last week. They_ve also deployed heavy weaponry including rocket launchers and anti aircraft missiles. Meanwhile, Syriais Information Minister has reportedly claimed that the shooting down of the jet was actually just a case of mistaken identity n he says they may have thought it was an Israeli aircraft Eila.EA) Thatis just mind-boggling if you ask me. The US military has sent troops to Jordan to keep an eye on Syria and it_s massive stockpile of chemical weapons. US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta made the announcement following a NATO meeting in Belgium. Panetta says about 150 special ops soldiers are working alongside Jordanian forces. Their goal is to watch the movement of chemical weapons in Syria and to help determine how to respond in the event violence spills into Jordan or any other neighboring countries. American President Barack Obama has warned Syria that any attempts to ship the weapons will prompt an immediate US response. Elsewhere in the region, tensions between Turkey and Syria seem to be escalating. On Wednesday the Turkish air force intercepted a Syrian passenger jet flying over Turkish airspace. Officials suspect the Syrian aircraft was being used to smuggle military equipment over from Russia. Eila Adams joins us now with more on this story. Rachelle twenty-five people were aboard the Damascus-bound Airbus A-3-20 when it was intercepted and led back to the Turkish capital of Ankara. This came after Turkey received intel of a possible weapons transfer aboard the aircraft. The country_s foreign minister would not give any specifics as to the type of illicit cargo. He said it is unacceptable that these types of transfers are being made over its airspace. Turkey has upped the rhetoric Rachelle by threatening a violent response should shelling continue near its shared border with Syria. Back to you. Thanks for the story Eila. On the technology front, the makers of one of the world_s most popular web browsers have egg on their face after a MASSIVE security flaw was discovered in their latest update. Our resident tech-spert Katherine Curtis has been following the developments. What_s the latest Kat? If you use Mozilla Firefox to watch the program, you_ll want to hear this. A huge security hole has been discovered in the latest update. Mozilla released a statement saying that the vulnerability could allow a malicious site to access a user_s entire search history. This affects the latest update - Firefox 16, which has since been taken offline. Mozilla says if you haven_t upgraded yet, you should be fine. If you HAVE, or if it was automatically updated, they advise that you downgrade to the previous version.You can do so by going to the link on your screen right now. The fighting - between Syrian rebels and security forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad (bah-SHAHR ahl ah-SAHD) - is said to be the fiercest that the capital has seen in the year-long uprising. The heavy fighting erupted in the upscale and heavily guarded al-Mezze (al MAT-say) area. Brazilian authorities say they_re going to press charges against 17 executives from oil giant Chevron as well as drilling contractor Transocean. This comes after a new oil leak was discovered off the Brazilian coast. The executives have been banned from leaving the country while the investigation is ongoing. This new leak is located near the site of a major oil spill last November. Chevron is already facing a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit over last year_s spill. In this latest case, prosecutors say they_ll be filing charges including environmental crimes.Now let_s shift our attention to the US and the latest in the GOP election race. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is coasting into this week_s Illinois primary after CRUSHING his competition in Puerto Rico. Eila Adams has been watching the results, and has all the latest. Eila?EA) Rachelle, unofficial early results say that Romney easily won the territory_s 20 delegates, with around 83-percent of the votes Romney said his win is based on his best-representing the views and feelings of Puerto Ricans. Rick Santorum was a VERY distant second with a mere 8-percent of votes. In Illinois, Romney is expected to eke out a win with a small margin of victory over Santorum. After Illinois, they_ll head to Louisiana, where pollsters predict Santorum will win over Romney.EA) In other news, Apple has been sitting on nearly 100 billion dollars in cash and it just announced what it plans on doing with SOME of that money. It_s been confirmed that come July, shareholders will begin receiving a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share. It_s the first time Apple has offered a dividend since way back in 1995. And Rachelle, the company has also earmarked 10 billion dollars to buy back some of its own shares over the next three years, back to you.RW) That_s a whole lot of money to be tossing around Eila.EA) It is. I_m Eila Adams and these are some of the headlines we_re following today. We_ll start off in Mexico, where results from the national election have lead to a series of protests. Although Institutional Revolutionary Party candidate Enrique PeÒa Nieto became the presumed president-elect, his main opponent has so far refused to concede. Supporters of the Democratic Revolution Party_s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took to the streets, echoing his belief that the election had been, quote, plagued by irregularities. Their protests have included blockades and sit-ins throughout the country. This is in spite of the fact several exit polls found PeÒa Nieto to have clinched the presidency. Official results aren_t expected until Wednesday. The U.S. has deployed wide-scale military reinforcements to the Persian Gulf. The move is a preemptive decision geared at deterring Iranian forces from shutting down the Strait of Hormuz HORE-mooz, which has become a hub of activity in recent months. With more on this story, let_s check in with guest anchor Laura. Eila, in addition to monitoring the Strait_s shipping routes, the US is increasing its number of fighter jets in the region, should the standoff over Iran_s nuclear program escalate. The US Navy is also beefing up its presence in Gulf waters, doubling the number of minesweepers in the area. This comes as the U.S. and its allies have begun strictly enforcing their embargo on Iranian oil exports. Speaking under condition of anonymity a US military official didn_t mince words, saying the message to Iran was Don_t even think about sending your boats out to harass our vessels or commercial shipping. We_ll put them on the bottom of the Gulf. That_s a pretty bold statement Eila. It is, but it seems like the US isn_t messing around this time. I guess we_ll see how Iran responds.Well, the ball is definitely in their court but if history is any indication, they won_t take that type of threat lightly. Let_s shift our gaze over to the eastern United States now, where record temperatures and violent storms have left millions of residents without power. Maryland, Washington DC, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia all declared states of emergency, after hurricane-force winds lead to blackouts and extensive property damage. To make matters worse, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has confirmed over two thousand record temperatures were either matched or broken since June 25th. Power companies have warned it may take several days before electricity is completely restored. And unfortunately, there doesn_t seem to be any end to the searing heat in the near future.
