Our top story today takes us back to Syria, where tensions between the beleaguered country and Turkey are on the rise.ES) The Turkish government is outraged by the downing of one of its warplanes by Syrian forces last week, and on Tuesday the Turkish military made a dramatic change to its rules of engagement.VS) Here_s the latest.1. VS) Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (reh-JEHP t-eye-YIHP ERR-doh-ahn) has issued a stern warning to Syrian forces operating near the Turkish-Syrian border. The country has altered its rules of engagement and will now treat any action by Syrian forces near the border as a potential military threat.ES) Erdogan harshly criticized Syria for shooting down the aircraft. According to the PM, the Turkish plane clearly posed no threat, and even if it did cross into Syrian airspace for a few seconds, there was no reason for Syria to attack. Meanwhile Turkey_s NATO allies have condemned the strike in the strongest possible terms, and are urging Syria to avoid similar incidents in the future.2. VS) Residents of the sunshine state will be getting everything BUT over the next couple of days. Weather experts say that Florida will get between 4 and 8 inches of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, as Tropical Storm Debby crawls across the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The storm has already flooded streets and ruined houses along the Florida panhandle. ES) As of Tuesday morning, the storm was centered some 85 miles from Cedar Key, Florida. The National Hurricane Center says that certain parts of the state could see as much as 25 inches of rain. Debby is packing sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, and has the potential to create a few tornadoes on her way across the state. 3. VS) In Washington, the US Supreme Court has shot down an appeal for it to re-assess its contentious Citizens United decision. The Court voted 5-4 against a review of whether individual states could limit corporate contributions of political campaigns. The case revolved around the state of Montana specifically, but had nationwide implications.ES) The 2010 Citizens United decision paved the way for the super PACs and massive corporate spending seen in recent election campaigns. According to the court, corporations have the same rights and freedoms as wealthy Americans, and should not be restricted in their support of political candidates. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled against a review, it is unlikely that the law will be repealed any time in the near future. A lot of mixed opinions about this one Vic.VS) That_s for sure. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the court had turned a blind eye to special interest money and political corruption.ES) And Republican leader Mitch McConnell called it an important victory for freedom of speech. Each country has been asked to create a contingency plan in the event that Greece exits the single currency. In a document obtained by Reuters (ROY-turs), officials urge a quote unquote amiable divorce between Greece and the rest of the Euro zone countries, should the Greeks vote to shun harsh EU austerity measures and try their luck with their own currency. If they do leave, the EU and the IMF will consider giving them 60 billion dollars to help ease the transition. The second Greek election in two months is scheduled for June seventeenth. Staying in Europe, just days after NATO announced its European missile defense shield had achieved interim operational capability, Russia has raised eyebrows by unveiling a secretive new weapon designed specifically to penetrate the barrier. It_s a move that can only heighten tensions between Russia and the US. For a more detailed look at the developments, we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams. EA) Vic, on Wednesday Russia successfully test-fired a missile, fitted with a dummy warhead, that traveled nearly 4-thousand miles It is an aggressive response to the US-led missile shield system in Europe, which NATO claims is being used to protect against attacks from rogue states such as Iran. However Russia is unhappy with the shield and says it changes the balance of military power in the region. Russia has already threatened to turn their missiles on European NATO sites.And Vic, the second named tropical storm of the East Pacific hurricane season is now a hurricane. Bud formed off the southwestern coast of Mexico early Thursday and is now considered a category 1 storm. It_s packing 90 mile per hour winds and is expected to grow much stronger over the next 24 hours. The National Hurricane Center in Miami expects Bud to then weaken as it approaches land late Friday. Back to you.VS) Bud sounds pretty harmless for now Eila, but with the hurricane season officially getting under way June 1, should we expect a lot more storms like this? EA) Actually, the concensus is NO. Forcasters are calling for a lighter then usual storm season with 12 named storms and 7 becoming hurricanes. VS) Forcasting is always a little murky but let_s hope they_re right. According to ZDF_s sources, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard - which supports the Assad regime in Syria and renowned terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon - used Iran Air and Yas Air to transport arms and explosives to Damascus and Beirut. Thirty-five percent of those tested couldn_t answer five of the ten questions correctly. What_s especially embarrassing is the fact that 97-percent of IMMIGRANTS pass the test. VS) Hereis the story.1. VS) Of course we_re talking about former Liberian president Charles Taylor. He was just sentenced to 50 years in prison for war crimes. An international court in The Hague (HAY-g) handed down the sentence following last monthis conviction of Taylor for war crimes. The court found that he had aided rebels in neighbouring Sierra Leone as they carried out a heinous campaign of terror.ES) In exchange for his help, Taylor received a ìsteady flowi of blood diamonds. The 64-year-old plans on appealing the 50-year sentence. Taylor says that he sees himself not as a war criminal, but a victim, and that he never stood a chance. Heis the first former head of state to be convicted of war crimes since World War 2.2. VS) Next up, a bizarre story is unfolding in Canada involving human remains. Police are looking for connections between several grisly discoveries. A package containing what seems to be a human foot was mailed to the offices of the ruling Conservative party in Ottawa. Meanwhile in Montreal, a janitor found human remains behind an apartment building n but not an entire body.ES) Police have also confirmed another body part was discovered at an Ottawa mail facility, but have remained tight-lipped on the details. Authorities say that itis too soon to link the incidents to each other. Ottawais major crimes unit is contacting other police departments for missing persons reports, or reports of similar crimes.3. VS) US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is stressing the importance of having a strong naval presence in Asia. Panetta made the remarks while speaking at the US naval academy in Annapolis, Maryland, just ahead of a visit to Asia for a security summit. He told the graduates that the US needs to strengthen ties with their allies in the region.ES) Panetta also mentioned China and their growing military, noting that America needs to be strong and vigilant in order to confront any challenge. However, he also said that they should be cooperating with China in order to ìshare security burdensi. Heill be traveling to China later this year for the first time as defense secretary.VS) Itis also important to keep a close eye on North Korea.ES) Very true. Weather experts say that Florida will get between 4 and 8 inches of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, as Tropical Storm Debby crawls across the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The storm has already flooded streets and ruined houses along the Florida panhandle. ES) As of Tuesday morning, the storm was centered some 85 miles from Cedar Key, Florida. The National Hurricane Center says that certain parts of the state could see as much as 25 inches of rain. Debby is packing sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, and has the potential to create a few tornadoes on her way across the state. 3. VS) In Washington, the US Supreme Court has shot down an appeal for it to re-assess its contentious Citizens United decision. The Court voted 5-4 against a review of whether individual states could limit corporate contributions of political campaigns. The case revolved around the state of Montana specifically, but had nationwide implications.ES) The 2010 Citizens United decision paved the way for the super PACs and massive corporate spending seen in recent election campaigns. Staying in Europe, just days after NATO announced its European missile defense shield had achieved interim operational capability, Russia has raised eyebrows by unveiling a secretive new weapon designed specifically to penetrate the barrier. It_s a move that can only heighten tensions between Russia and the US. For a more detailed look at the developments, we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams. EA) Vic, on Wednesday Russia successfully test-fired a missile, fitted with a dummy warhead, that traveled nearly 4-thousand miles It is an aggressive response to the US-led missile shield system in Europe, which NATO claims is being used to protect against attacks from rogue states such as Iran. However Russia is unhappy with the shield and says it changes the balance of military power in the region. Russia has already threatened to turn their missiles on European NATO sites.And Vic, the second named tropical storm of the East Pacific hurricane season is now a hurricane. Bud formed off the southwestern coast of Mexico early Thursday and is now considered a category 1 storm.
