The Pakistani government has re-opened key supply routes to NATO-led forces in Afghanistan. And they did it because they finally got the apology they were looking for from the US regarding the accidental killing of 24 Pakistani troops last November. US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton offered her condolences in a telephone call with Pakistan_s Foreign Minister. Over the seven months since the incident, relations between the two countries have become increasingly frosty.Seven-thousand truckloads of US equipment was left stranded. The American government in turn held hundreds of millions of dollars in aid money intended for Pakistan, and canceled purchases of Pakistani oil. All_s forgiven now, however. And the re-opening of the supply routes is a hugely important step as NATO troops prepare to leave Afghanistan by 2014. Elsewhere in the region, devastating flooding in northeast India has killed at least 95 people and left over 2 million others homeless. Natasha Olenski has been surveying the damage and joins us now with the latest. Peyton, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says the floods are the worst in recent times. More than 2-thousand villages have been affected by the rising water levels, the byproduct of a week of monsoon rains. Emergency workers are using helicopters and speedboats to save stranded citizens from danger zones and drop off food and first aid supplies. The Indian government is putting 90 million dollars towards recovery efforts. Fortunately, the water has started to recede, and the focus will soon shift to rebuilding all the damaged infrastructure.Meanwhile in the US, the JetBlue pilot who had an infamous meltdown during a flight from Las Vegas to New York has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. A Texas judge concluded that Clayton F. Osbon is dealing with a severe mental disease or defect. During the March 27th flight, Osbon left the cockpit to yell at terrified passengers about terrorists and religion. The pilot will be sent to a psychiatric facility for further evaluation, and will have his next day in court on or before August sixth. Back to you Peyton.Thanks Nat. It_s scary to think that a man in his state of health was in charge of a plane full of people. So what exactly happens on August sixth?Basically the judge will review the results of Osbon_s mental evaluation and decide whether he should be released or admitted to a mental ward. US President Barack Obama spoke to the country in the wake of the horrific shooting spree in an Aurora, Colorado movie theatre that killed 12 people and injured scores more during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. He met and spoke with survivors and the families of the victims, and later, the visibly moved President had this to say to the press:The alleged gunman - 24-year-old James Holmes - is said to be uncooperative with authorities. Police spent the better part of the weekend attempting to enter his booby-trap riddled apartment. No motive for the killing spree has been given.Another prominent politician to weigh in on the tragedy is New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. Laura Conner joins us now to tell us what he had to say about Gun Control in the wake of the shooting. Laura?Vic, the mayor is accusing Obama of ignoring the issue of gun control during his first term in office. Bloomberg - a very vocal advocate of strict gun regulations - is calling on both the President and GOP candidate Mitt Romney to address the issue NOW. He_s calling both of them out, saying quote, ...they_ve said things before that they_re in favor of banning things like assault weapons. Where are they now and why don_t they stand up? And if they want our votes, they better.Also, in the wake of the shooting, Warner Brothers and many other studios declined to officially report box office totals for the weekend. Nevertheless, it appears that The Dark Knight Rises still managed to dominate the box office, despite the tragedy. According to anonymous studio sources, the Batman flick managed to take in an estimated 162-million dollars over the weekend. That fell short of expectations of a 190-million dollar opening, but that_s to be expected after such a senseless act of violence Vic.I_m actually surprised anyone went to see it at all considering all the talk of potential copycat shooters. With that in mind Vic, many theatres banned anyone with a mask and beefed up security. Something else to note is that most of the movie goers for the opening weekend bought their tickets well in advance, and I guess they didn_t want to give in to fear. The two explosions occurred during morning rush hour. The blasts occurred in a southern district of the capital, and supposedly targeted a military intelligence compound nearby. A ceasefire has been in place in Syria since mid-April, but itis done little to curb the violence.Barack Obama has become the first US President to endorse gay marriage. However, he said he made the announcement a little sooner than he would have liked. On Wednesday, Obama told ABC that he would have officially gone public with his position at the Democratic National Convention in September. But over the weekend Vice President Joe Biden told NBCis ìMeet the Pressi that he was absolutely comfortable with gay marriage. Obama acknowledged that Biden had quote ìprobably gotten out a little bit over his skisi. In Indonesia, search crews have located the wreckage of the Russian passenger plane that went missing during a demonstration flight on Wednesday. Debris from the Sukhoi suh-KOY Superjet was found on the side of Mount Salak SAW-lak, a volcano south of Jakarta ja-KAR-tah. 40 passengers and 8 crewmembers were on board. If that fails, Toronto will become totally plastic bag free on January first. The overall US housing market is stumbling, but high-end luxury real estate in Miami is soaring Case in point, the former home of famed fashion designer Gianni Versace has just hit the market, with a staggering 125 million dollar asking price So what does that get you? Oh about 19-thousand square feet, 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and a 54-foot pool lined in 24-karat gold. Versace bought the South beach home - originally built in the 1930s n in 1992 for 10 million dollars. A town in Massachusetts has passed a new law that just might get its more colorful residents to clean up their potty mouths. Residents in Middleborough voted overwhelmingly in favor of a 20-dollar fine for anyone using profanity in public spaces. That means police can write up anyone using foul language the same way they would for a parking ticket. However, the Obama team claims that Romney_s own SEC filings PROVE he was with Bain for a few more years, when the firm was outsourcing jobs to other countries. They say that either Romney_s lying about when he left, or the filings were false, which constitutes a felony. Romney_s now claiming that he and I quote retired retroactively. They_re demanding an apology for the deceptive ads but, unsurprisingly, Obama says they won_t be getting one.In financial news today, American government officials speaking anonymously say that the US Justice Department is building cases against several prominent financial institutions for manipulating interest rates. The firms - including Barclays n are suspected of fixing the London interbank offered rate n or LIBOR. Those rates would then determine borrowing costs for everything from mortgages to student loans. Barclays has already agreed to a 450-million dollar settlement in a case relating to rate-rigging. However, that deal does NOT protect individual employees from criminal prosecution. It_s expected that charges will be laid against at least one bank within the next several months.A New York Times report alleges that the US Food and Drug Administration has been spying on its own scientists The FDA has admitted to monitoring the emails of as many as 21 people, including some messages that were sent directly to President Barack Obama over safety issues. The agency claims that they had evidence that trade secrets had been leaking out, in particular from the makers of medical devices and prescription drugs. A spokesperson for the FDA says that they limited their monitoring to communications on work computers. But some critics claim that it_s a tactic by the agency to discourage whistle-blowers. According to the Bild newspaper, Magnotta was caught in an internet cafe. After escaping from Montreal, it_s believed he traveled from Paris to Berlin on a bus. Authorities say he_s now in custody and could stand before a judge as early as Tuesday. The 29-year old is the prime suspect in the horrific murder of a Montreal university student, whose dismembered body parts were put in the mail. International media outlets are referring to Magnotta as the Canadian Psycho.Over to China now, where the 23rd anniversary of the Tiananmen (tee-ENN-ah-men) Square massacre was marked once again with the arrest of dissidents. Peyton Priestly joins us now with the story. PP) Eila, hundreds of activists in Beijing have been rounded up on the anniversary of the 1989 event. According to police, they were taken into custody to prevent them from demonstrating on the June 4th anniversary. Tianenmen Square is still a sore spot with the Chinese government. They censor any mention of it in state media, and continue to deny any wrongdoing. This roundup of activists is something that happens every year at this time. It also comes after the US angered China by calling for the release of dissidents jailed during the protests 23 years ago.And the end appears to be near for ailing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (OO-goh CHAH-vehs.). Spanish newspaper ABC reports that the cancer riddling his body has entered its final stage. They say he_s on a potent cocktail of drugs, including an opiate that_s 100 times more powerful than morphine. Doctors say that the drugs are so strong that his body may not be able to tolerate them for much longer. They also don_t expected him to survive more than a few months. But Chavez hasn_t given up yet Eila. Late last week, he registered as a candidate for his third re-election. And they did it because they finally got the apology they were looking for from the US regarding the accidental killing of 24 Pakistani troops last November. US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton offered her condolences in a telephone call with Pakistan_s Foreign Minister. Over the seven months since the incident, relations between the two countries have become increasingly frosty.Seven-thousand truckloads of US equipment was left stranded. The American government in turn held hundreds of millions of dollars in aid money intended for Pakistan, and canceled purchases of Pakistani oil. All_s forgiven now, however. And the re-opening of the supply routes is a hugely important step as NATO troops prepare to leave Afghanistan by 2014. Elsewhere in the region, devastating flooding in northeast India has killed at least 95 people and left over 2 million others homeless. Natasha Olenski has been surveying the damage and joins us now with the latest. Peyton, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says the floods are the worst in recent times. More than 2-thousand villages have been affected by the rising water levels, the byproduct of a week of monsoon rains. Emergency workers are using helicopters and speedboats to save stranded citizens from danger zones and drop off food and first aid supplies. The Indian government is putting 90 million dollars towards recovery efforts. Fortunately, the water has started to recede, and the focus will soon shift to rebuilding all the damaged infrastructure.Meanwhile in the US, the JetBlue pilot who had an infamous meltdown during a flight from Las Vegas to New York has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. A Texas judge concluded that Clayton F. Osbon is dealing with a severe mental disease or defect. During the March 27th flight, Osbon left the cockpit to yell at terrified passengers about terrorists and religion. The pilot will be sent to a psychiatric facility for further evaluation, and will have his next day in court on or before August sixth. Back to you Peyton.Thanks Nat. It_s scary to think that a man in his state of health was in charge of a plane full of people. So what exactly happens on August sixth?Basically the judge will review the results of Osbon_s mental evaluation and decide whether he should be released or admitted to a mental ward. No motive for the killing spree has been given.Another prominent politician to weigh in on the tragedy is New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. Laura Conner joins us now to tell us what he had to say about Gun Control in the wake of the shooting. Laura?Vic, the mayor is accusing Obama of ignoring the issue of gun control during his first term in office. Bloomberg - a very vocal advocate of strict gun regulations - is calling on both the President and GOP candidate Mitt Romney to address the issue NOW. He_s calling both of them out, saying quote, ...they_ve said things before that they_re in favor of banning things like assault weapons. Where are they now and why don_t they stand up? And if they want our votes, they better.Also, in the wake of the shooting, Warner Brothers and many other studios declined to officially report box office totals for the weekend. Nevertheless, it appears that The Dark Knight Rises still managed to dominate the box office, despite the tragedy. According to anonymous studio sources, the Batman flick managed to take in an estimated 162-million dollars over the weekend. That fell short of expectations of a 190-million dollar opening, but that_s to be expected after such a senseless act of violence Vic.I_m actually surprised anyone went to see it at all considering all the talk of potential copycat shooters. With that in mind Vic, many theatres banned anyone with a mask and beefed up security. Something else to note is that most of the movie goers for the opening weekend bought their tickets well in advance, and I guess they didn_t want to give in to fear. Police in Berlin say they_ve arrested wanted fugitive and alleged killer Luka Magnotta. According to the Bild newspaper, Magnotta was caught in an internet cafe. After escaping from Montreal, it_s believed he traveled from Paris to Berlin on a bus. Authorities say he_s now in custody and could stand before a judge as early as Tuesday. The 29-year old is the prime suspect in the horrific murder of a Montreal university student, whose dismembered body parts were put in the mail. International media outlets are referring to Magnotta as the Canadian Psycho.Over to China now, where the 23rd anniversary of the Tiananmen (tee-ENN-ah-men) Square massacre was marked once again with the arrest of dissidents. Peyton Priestly joins us now with the story. PP) Eila, hundreds of activists in Beijing have been rounded up on the anniversary of the 1989 event. According to police, they were taken into custody to prevent them from demonstrating on the June 4th anniversary. Tianenmen Square is still a sore spot with the Chinese government. They censor any mention of it in state media, and continue to deny any wrongdoing. This roundup of activists is something that happens every year at this time. It also comes after the US angered China by calling for the release of dissidents jailed during the protests 23 years ago.And the end appears to be near for ailing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (OO-goh CHAH-vehs.). Spanish newspaper ABC reports that the cancer riddling his body has entered its final stage. They say he_s on a potent cocktail of drugs, including an opiate that_s 100 times more powerful than morphine. Doctors say that the drugs are so strong that his body may not be able to tolerate them for much longer. They also don_t expected him to survive more than a few months. But Chavez hasn_t given up yet Eila. Late last week, he registered as a candidate for his third re-election.
